What do you think of acquiring cheaper guys likely to be available like Tully Banta-Cain, who has shownpass rushing ability in a reserve role, getting 5.5 sacks plus 2 in the playoffs.

or a guy like Dewayne White from Tampa, a pass rushing DE that could convert to a 3-4 OLB?

I dont think we are gonna go OLB unless we move Carp inside over Bradie James.

I'd rather a true 3-4 DE who can apply the pressure... which we might just have on our team already.

we do, but we employ the "at the snap of the ball, wait and count to 5" technique before they move towards the QB

Screw "Cheaper guys", let's go get Dwight Freeney and take care of this pass rush problem once and for all (or at least until Freeney and Ware retire).

would you be willing to give up draft pick(s) for Freeney? I might, but Jerry may not.

or we could move Ware to RDE in the 4-3 where he probably belongs anyway, and he could get his 12-16 sacks every yr

We don't ask our OLBs to cover WRs, only reroute them. I'm sure he wouldn't be completely comfortable with it right away, but he did run a 4.38 before he was drafted so he certainly has the speed for it. That's another reason I'd want to go after him. He's got the speed to cover anyone we'd need him to, but he's not a straight line runner - he can actually change direction quickly (unlike Manny Lawson).

Plus, with Carpenter inside we'd have two ILBs with some ability to get to the QB too.

With those 4 at LB, all we'd need now is a DCoord that let's them go kill QBs.

there's almost no chance he's going to be available anyway, so the point is probably moot

that said, I dont think Freeney would make a good transition to OLB anyway, and I dont want to see any defense employed where Ware rushes the passer LESS than he already does

Yes, I would. I wouldn't give up 2 firsts though.

Ware's best position is 3-4 OLB. Believe it or not, he is an asset out redirecting WRs when he's not rushing the passer (he basically won the Colts game for us out in coverage). And even with Ware at 4-3 DE we'd still need another pass rusher so that wouldn't fix anything.

If we had Ware rushing the passer EVERY play, it wouldn't take advantage of ALL his physical abilities.

True, he likely won't be available, but I can dream, right?

And about playing 3-4 OLB, he'd have no problem with it IMO. Most mock drafts had him going to the Steelers because he'd be a perfect fit at OLB anyway.

IMO, he'd be a better 3-4 OLB then 4-3 DE. If Merriroids could get 17 sacks (in 12 games) as a 3-4 OLB, then Freeney could get 20 and he'd likely be MUCH better then Merriroids in coverage too.

Freeney is a UFA...why would we have to give up a draft pick.....only if he is franchised

I would love to get Tully Banta-Cain.....he has really put his name out there with his play during the post season so far.

And even sadder.. after another 5 seconds go by they're still no closer to him for some strange reason.

Back on topic though it just means we have to make sure and sign Singleton to a long term deal.. pronto! ;)

why are u people so inclined for another OLB? u people do know how much money is already put into this LB core right?

james and akin will be in the middle, and carp and ellis will be manning the strongside. if they get another OLb i think its the draft. never fails every yr people cry and complain about the offense. but come offseason all they want to talk about is the defense.

The highest rated 3-4 end would be Adam Carriker out of Nebraska. What I've read of him seems to make him out to be an Aaron Smith type DE, not bad, very solid. A sleeper, though, and I don't want to sound like a Hawaii homer, but Ikaika Alama-Francis is going to be a good pass rusher imo in this league and has the requisite size (6-6, 285) to play as a 3-4 end.
