Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki has been suspended by the league for one game without play following his flagrant foul on Utah Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko Monday night.
Nowitzki was whistled for what was originally deemed a flagrant foul, penalty one, after sending Kirilenko to the floor with 7:04 remaining in the opening quarter of Utah's 116-110 victory. After biting on a pump fake, Nowitzki collared Kirilenko around the neck and brought him to floor, causing him to land awkardly on his hip.
Kirilenko remained on the court face-down for a couple of minutes before finally getting up, making both foul shots and eventually limping off the court to the locker room.
Later in the night, Kirilenko returned to the arena from the hospital, where he had undergone preliminary x-rays that turned up negative.
NBA executive vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson re-evaluated the incident and upgraded the foul to a flagrant, penalty two, making his announcement Wednesday.
Nowitzki will serve his suspension Thursday night, when the Mavs host the Houston Rockets. For the season, the 7-foot German is averaging 23.6 points and 8.7 rebounds per game, on the heels of his 2006-07 MVP campaign.
