NY Giants promote linebacker

With captain Antonio Pierce on injured reserve with a bulging disc in his neck, five-year veteran Chase Blackburn has replaced him the past two games.

But the Giants also need depth at middle linebacker. Second-year pro Jonathan Goff, used primarily on special teams, took some practice reps in the middle during Wednesday's practice. And he will probably get some playing time against the Cowboys.

Blackburn has 35 tackles and a half sack this season. Goff, a fifth-round draft pick out of Vanderbilt, has played on special teams in every game. He's made only one brief appearance at linebacker.

``I have been following along and studying just as much as the other guys,'' Goff said. ``So whenever an opportunity might come along, i will be ready to step in.''

Blackburn is no slouch against the run, but hopefully we can exploit his lack of speed in the passing game.

Maybe someone should send Goff a few photos of the bottom of Witten's shoes so he can familiarize himself with what he'll be watching go right by him.

Can you imagine what Jason Witten is thinking right now if this guy is on the field covering him?

Allow me to guess....
