Giants' Tuck Is Fined $7,500 for Hit on Bollinger

November 7 New York Times

"Justin Tuck was fined $7,500 by the N.F.L. for his roughing-the-passer penalty last Sunday on Brooks Bollinger.

"Our job description is basically to destroy a quarterback, but you've got to pick and choose how to do it," said Tuck, who said he would appeal the fine.

Tuck was penalized in the third quarter of a 35-14 victory against the Dallas Cowboys for tackling Bollinger as Bollinger threw an incompletion.

"You can't hit him in the head, you can't hit him below the knees," Tuck said. "Obviously, you can't hit him hard, either." Tuck was penalized for landing on Bollinger with the full force of his 274 pounds.

According to Randall Liu, information manager for the National Football Conference, Tuck was fined because "he unnecessarily drove the opposing quarterback to the ground." He said Tuck's actions violated Rule 12, Section 2, Article 12(2) of the N.F.L.'s official rules.

In an e-mail message, Liu said the fine was issued by Gene Washington, the league's director of football operations. The league has emphasized protection of quarterbacks against rough play to prevent injury, but Giants Coach Tom Coughlin said he did not think the play was worth calling a penalty.

"No, it was not," Coughlin said Monday. "On the spot, the official thought it was. The guy was attacking the quarterback. He doesn't have a checklist that he goes through. It is foolish to continue dialogue about this because it doesn't settle anything.""

Wow! I'm glad we have Justa Thug, er Tuck, out there protecting us from all of the evil quarterbacks in the world.

It shouldn't have been a penalty and certainly shouldn't have resulted in a fine. I'm disappointed in the direction the NFL has chosen to go with these type of situations.

I didn't think that hit was a big deal not worthy of a flag or fine

I agree. I thought it was a bogus flag and the fine is just as bogus. It's football.

Oh I agree .. it was a stupid penalty to call because it's not a tackling method that typically causes injury like blows to the head or knees.

I was just shocked at his "destory" comment which is fine in the locker room or on the field, but not necessarily an intelligent thing to say to the media.

He should win his appeal. Obviously anyone can tell the Brooks Bollinger isn't a QB.

Terrible penalty and fine. It's not touch football, the name of the game is tackling which he did legally.

The call is understandable. Though I don't agree with it, I had the luxury of instant replay to help make that decision, the refs have milliseconds to make the call.

But the fine is stupid. Pretty soon the league will have QB's wearing flags.

I think its a stupid rule, but he led with his helmet and drove the QB into the ground. Thats a penalty.

I don't agree with it, but the right calls have been made in regards to the hit.

I wonder if Romo would of been at QB. If he would of even been fined?? Romo has taken worse hits than that.

uhh no. Basic Fundamentals of football, wrap up and drive the ball carrier to the ground.

Ware has done it to Marshall faulk before and received no penalty

Why are players getting flagged, fined, and in some cases suspended for playing football.........yet nothing happens when they get caught with drugs, prostitutes, doing violent acts, etc......unless their name is PacMan Jones?

Polamalu is absolutely correct in his assessment of the league.

That was a legit football play by Tuck. There was no malicious intent to take a cheap shot or injure our QB. He rushed the passer, and got a very good hit on the QB. He didn't get Brooks high or low. He didn't get Brooks with the helmet. Since he dove at Brooks, he could not contain the momentum of the hit and the fall.

That is it. If the league is going to continue this complete BS, and ruin for all of us fans. I say, let all QBs wear pink jerseys, and do not ever allow them to be touched. You might as well, because week after week, players are getting fined for good, clean hits on the QB.
