Before they shed blood, sweat and tears against the Cowboys in Texas this weekend, the Giants were given a crash course on the Ebola virus, which has Dallas on high alert.

The players and other team staffers were given a fact sheet crafted by the Duke Infection Control Outreach Network that outline some basic facts about the virus — including risk of transmission and how to evaluate suspicious symptoms.

What's sad is that the Houston Texans fans were making fun of the Ebola situation in Dallas, wearing masks not for protection but to poke fun. Really classless. I hope the virus is contained so this doesn't become a Dallas or even a national epidemic.

Bill Gates has donated $50m to researching ebola and says the problem will be solved within a few months, fwiw.

From what I understand the virus is not easily spread. You have to come into contact with the bodily fluids of a person who is both infected and showing symptoms to become infected. The regions where the outbreak has been the worst have been poor countries that have sub par sanitation where a virus like this can thrive and spread more easily. I honestly don't see Ebola as a major threat in the USA as long as the medical care professionals and the CDC to their jobs effectively. I guess the real fear is if it were to mutate into an airborne virus but I read an article on it today that said that Ebola lacks the ability to attach itself to cells within the respiratory system and its highly unlikely that it would be able to develop this ability since virtually no virus like Ebola has been known to be able to do this naturally.

Here is the situation: One guy who contracted the virus in Africa died, two of his immediate care givers have become infected. Nobody in the community has become infected. That's a total of three people in a metropolitan area of millions. The chances of getting this disease are infinitesimally small. The chances of the Giants plane crashing on the way to Dallas are higher than any of them contracting Ebola there. Right now, the flu is probably a greater public health hazard than Ebola.

completely unnecessary imo unless the team, coaches, trainers, etc. are planning on visiting the quarantined hospital rooms and homes of those effected

Giants should be more worried about coming down with a bad case of a beat down.

"So, in conclusion, don't handle infected blood or vomit during your stay in Dallas."

This is so silly, it almost sounds like one of Coughlin's tricks. If I could think of how it might possibly help them out, I would think it was. As it is, it just seems like a waste of preparation time prior to the game. Or a story he leaked to maybe take attention off the matchup. I can't imagine them being seriously concerned about the team getting ebola, of all things.
