O.K. If you have 4 downs and you want to kick the field goal on first down?

Do you get to kick the field goal all 4 downs until you make the field goal or does the defense take over after the first missed fg?

I have a friend that said that if we had tried the field goal on 3th down that the ball would have gone to seattle instead of us getting another crack at it on 4th.

thanx to who ever can give me a clear cut answer!!!

Defense takes over.

if you get the attempt off and miss it you do not receive another attempt. However, had we gone for the FG on 3rd down and had the bobble happened we would have had another down-being 4th down.

only reason to kick on 3rd is in case the team screws up like false start etc etc then you get 4th to kick it.

You would never kick a FG on 1st down, EVER. You only attempt a FG on 3rd down in case of what happened in Seattle. You fumble the snap, it then becomes 4th down and you try again.

If you kick on 3rd and miss it, tough luck. You dont get to kick again on 4th, the possession changes over.

Those saying once you attempt the FG the defense takes over are exactly correct. If that weren't true teams would try FGs 4 straight downs until they made one.

If the bobble had happened on 3rd down because the FG was not attempted, we could have tried again. But if Tony had made a 1st down and we missed the FG try on 1st down, it would be Seattle's ball.

Thank you my man, that is what was confusing me....because i keep seeing people on the board sayin we would get another chance if we had went for it on 3th down thats all...and no im not new to the game..i just dont claim to know every rule!!!!

Never say never...it happens all the time in overtime...once a team gets to a chip shot, they will often kick it and win, no matter what the down.

i am not sure, but I think the ball has to cross the line of scrimage to be considered an attempt.. is that right? For example, say Romo handles the snap clean but the guy off the edge blocks it,, it goes backwards and Romo recovers it at the 20.. and it was not 4th down already,, would we have had another shot?

There is no such thing as 3th down.

It's 3rd down.

That just bugged the hell out of me.

Once is a mistake - twice is just plain wrong.

That is why we should have lined up for a FG on 3rd down and ran a fake in the Seatlle game. No real downside to doing that. If we don't convert, kick the FG on 4th. If its a first down run the clock out some more then kick the FG. If its a TD than its a TD. :(

You'd kick a field goal on first down if there were only a couple seconds left...
