Observing Wade's 'D' one more time

I noticed that while watching the SD vs. NE playoff game on NFL Replay, that when standing, Shawn Merriman mostly didn't rush the QB immediately, sometimes shuffling a couple of steps into coverage or getting a read on a possible draw play. Whe he did rush standing, it was almost as if he was making sure the OT was about to engage with the DE shooting between the G-T gap. Merriman would then use his great speed and strength off the edge to get into the backfield. This is what I think the coaching staff means when they say the players will be allowed to freelance once there responsibilities have been secured. I also noticed that when rushing from the down position, NE's OT was able to identify Merriman as a rusher and the SD 'D' was less effective, as Brady was able to march his team down the field for a score right before halftime. I believe it when other's say we have way more talent on our defense, and when you think of ALL the possible linebacker, D-Line packages we can use, hopefully we will be destructive to opposing offenses this season.

I think it is a bit far fetched to say we have alot more talent in our top 7 than San Diego. I dont want to start a Ware Merriman debate here. But their front 7 is probably as good as your going to get in the NFL these days.

Ok, i say overall Dallas defense better , here is why!!!!
Dallas LDE Marcus Spears SanDiego LDE Lou Castillo Equal
NT Jason Fergueson NT Jamaal Williams Equal
RDE Chris Canty RDE Igor Olshansky Equal but Canty maybe all pro this year

(D) *LOLB Gregg Ellis/Spencer LOLB Stephen Cooper Dallas due to E/Spencer
(SD *) MILB Brady James MILB Shawn Phillips just alittle to PhillipsSD
(D *)MILB Akin Odole MILB Stephen Cooper Dallas Odole (with Burnett and Carpenter a bigger edge)
WOLB Demarcus Ware WOLB Shawn Merriman Equal

(D *) LCB Terrnace Newman LCB Quentin Jahmer Dallas Newman better
(D*)SS Roy Williams SS Jue Blawoh Dallas Williams better
(D*) WS Ken Hamlin FS Marlon McCree Dallas Hamlin better
RCB Anthony Henry RCB Antonio Cromartie equal

so, i see the cowboys just having alittle edge with ILB with burnett and carpenter, next our secondary is superior than SD, so with a better pass rush, with Ellis and Spencer, that should give us even a super super secondary; if you watched the SD/Patriot playoff game, their secondary was SD main problem. With us having a better secondary, addition of spencer, health of ellis, more free lancing for spears, canty, and hatcher, we should be better on defensive line too,

so all in all, our defense should be totally superior, joe

I wish you were right, but Castillo is much better than any DE we have, Jamaal Williams is better than Fergueson, and Shaun Phillips plays LOLB, not inside linebacker. Phillips and Merriman are as of right now better than Ware and Spencer/Ellis. Our secondary is probably better than San Diego, but their front seven is definetely better until we prove otherwise.

I disagree bigtime!! I think our front 7 is more aggressive, quicker, stronger, and faster then there front 7. Our front 7 just wasn't allowed show their talents but you'll see it this year..

Dallas' front seven can be just as good as San Diego's, maybe better. San Diego was allowed to be aggressive while Dallas played much more conservative. Also, Dallas has some serious young and inexperienced talent on D.

Dallas might be better before it's all said and done. We are fixing to find out. I still think the core of the linebacker group will be Ware, Spencer, Carpenter, and Burnett. I'm talking long-term, maybe not this year. Although, I hope it happens in 07.

Spears, Ratliff, Hatcher, Canty, and Ferguson give us great talent on the d-line. San Diego has some nice depth on defense as well, and they have that giant nose tackle. Still, I love the Cowboys' DE's, and Ferguson is better than solid.

The secondary should be advantage Cowboys. San Diego is looking to solve its own FS problem. Newman, Williams, Henry, Glenn, and Hamlin could swing the debate in Dallas favor. I do like the corner S.D. took #1 (Cromartie). Jammer and Cromartie could make a very good duo. Ken Hamlin is critical for Dallas. He could be the difference between the two secondaries. A good Hamlin should mean a great Roy Williams.

If you take out experience and just go by talent, Dallas can match San Diego position by position.

Ware vs Merriman/Spears vs Castillo/ Spencer vs Phillips/ Ferguson vs Williams/ Igor O. vs Canty

San Diego is rebuilding their inside linebacking core. Dallas has a #1 and a
#2 draft pick that could tilt the debate in Dallas' favor.

If you gave me my choice between the two, I'll take Dallas' personnel on defense based on talent and potential.

Burnett, Carpenter, Spencer, Hatcher, Ratliff, and Hamlin are six players that could make this debate mute in two years. If they develop and live up to their draft status, Dallas' defense will be a monster.

I hope the Cowboys do get McFadden, because he is a dang good answer to L.T. I predict we will meet San Diego in the Super Bowl before the next three years are up.

There's no way you can say our DEs are equal to their DEs, unless you're judging based on something other than reality.

41gy, i agree with that,

i think our defense is better than san diegos due to one thing. Remember when our defense begger and begged Parcells to turn them loose in the Cowboy Colt game, Parcells did and we won,

we harressed and harressed and sacked Peyton Manning silly. so if our defense is shown how to attack, be allowed to blitz in good schemes, like Wade Phillips will show us, then I say our defense is better, and i do give our defense with burnett and carpenter a bigger edge, then you add in spencer. Everything else on front 7 is equal with san diego and dallas.

Then, you add in we have better quality secondary, and you give our secondary guys a better pass rush, that will only make newman, williams, hamlin, watkins, and henry better, Then I am thinking courtney brown will be a star cb in 2 years. Then, if you saw what the coaches said about ball, that will make our secondary even better, i was never fond of nate jones.

finally i agree, i think we and san diego will be in the super bowl and meet in 2-3 years, especially if we get McFadden. I am thinking though with our defense, and if jason garrett is any good at coaching, and with wade phillips defense style, we can get to the super bowl this year, possibly win it.

but, even if we just get to the title game this year, getting McFadden next year, then look out super bowl here we come.

No. My view isn't a "homer" view. It's is a view based on undisputed evidence. Before the 06 year started, many of the GMs in the NFL said that Dallas had the best personnel on Defense. Why do people get the "homer" tag placed on them for taking a valid positive view?

If Spears, the 20th pick in 05, can match Castillo's production from a pressure standpoint and become a disruptive force, Dallas DEs will be better than San Diego's DEs.

Remember, Marcus Spears was the #1 rated DE against the run coming out of LSU. A sleeker, quicker, and aggressive Spears will run into many RBs and destroy them.

41gy, you got that right, spears took it personally this year, and went back to louisiana and did the uphill runs he did in college, lost 20 pounds and got in shape, just like he did when LSU won the national championship, he is primed

but the key player for us that will kill teams besides spears is chris canty, they said he was unblockable in team practices. I think he is primed for super super year.

so look out, this year our defense i think will be nasty, nasty. Might even be as good as our doomsday defense in 77, and as good as possibly the steel curtain of the steelers.

i am talking big and bad defense, mark my words, you heard it hear first.

Why not save yourself a lot of keystrokes next time, and just finish the statement above with, "Because I'm a homer!!!!"

The keyword in your post is IF. If this happens, then they'll be better. If that happens, then they'll be better.

Dallas d-linemen still have to prove they can be all-world. SD d-line actually has been all-world. Until then, SD is better. Not going to say leaps and bounds better, but they're better.

And saying a certain player was "unblockable" during minicamp/s, is both unremarkable and troubling at the same time.

Dallas D is better! No butts about that! Girls do not know football like men do! We did happen to beat the Super Bowl Champs in the regular season and we have upgraded this season in the draft and free agency along with a Wade Phillips a better defense schemer!
