I noticed that while watching the SD vs. NE playoff game on NFL Replay, that when standing, Shawn Merriman mostly didn't rush the QB immediately, sometimes shuffling a couple of steps into coverage or getting a read on a possible draw play. Whe he did rush standing, it was almost as if he was making sure the OT was about to engage with the DE shooting between the G-T gap. Merriman would then use his great speed and strength off the edge to get into the backfield. This is what I think the coaching staff means when they say the players will be allowed to freelance once there responsibilities have been secured. I also noticed that when rushing from the down position, NE's OT was able to identify Merriman as a rusher and the SD 'D' was less effective, as Brady was able to march his team down the field for a score right before halftime. I believe it when other's say we have way more talent on our defense, and when you think of ALL the possible linebacker, D-Line packages we can use, hopefully we will be destructive to opposing offenses this season.
