They have been in talks for a couple of weeks right? Since neither side has been able to meet in the middle and come up with something fair, it is time to just stand pat this offseason & let Romo play out his contract, maybe trade Spencer for a 3 & if Romo can lead this team anywhere special in 2013-14 then he will get his pay day...It did make sense in the beginning to try & get him extended so they would be able to add at least 1 solid piece to the puzzle, but that no longer looks to be the case, unless they are on the verge of something in the next 24 hours.

Funny that nothing is being said by either party and yet, you are concluding Romo and his agent is playing hard ball? Where are you getting this from? How do you know if Jones are low balling him or not?

Fact is we have no damn idea what is going on with this contract negotiation.

I don't know if they are or if they are not. But if his agent is worth a crap he sure as heck should be.

Romo has all the leverage.

I still don't know why everyone thinks Romo needs to be extended. Let him play out his contract and then franchise him after that if you absolutely need too. Dallas should be looking to replace him anyway and next year looks like great year to do that in draft.

You're right, we have no idea.. I am just going out on a limb thinking his agent saw what SB QB Flacco & Tom Brady's guaranteed money & is now overrating Romo's worth. Just my thinking bud, sorry.

Or maybe there hasn't been any serious talks yet?

that would make zero sense considering FA period has started and Dallas has no cap space. Dallas is hardly in position to by-pass FA considering they have numerous holes to file. The reality is that they are most likely far apart and it will take time.

I still think there's a very real chance Romo doesn't wants to resign with the team.

They can't stand pat. They need to rework his contract just to get under the cap.

They need that money for a free agent or two and for the draft picks.

Reworking Romo's deal is the quickest way to accomplish that.

Personally, I'd rather allow him to go the Flacco route and play out his current deal, but we've dug ourselves into such a hole with bad contracts (thanks Stephen) that we've painted ourselves into a corner. It would be interesting to see how Romo would perform having to prove himself for a contract extension.

I wouldn't say Romo has all the leverage, a lot, maybe. But, the Cowboys and Jerry Jones have a good deal of leverage also. Pay Romo $16M this year and if he plays well, franchise him for one year. The Cowboys get Romo for two years playing in contract years. You'll get Romo's best. And if he lost it and his play deteriorates, you don't have a long term contract.

Romo can make things a lot easier if he signs a cap-friendly contract. If Romo truly wants a ring, grabbing every dollar he can squeeze out of the Cowboys isn't the way to go.

The Flacco situation was different. I'm pretty sure his cap hit last year was far less than what Tony's would be this year.

I'm fine either way.
I like Romo but as with all things, there are upsides and downsides to these situations. Extending him has both.

I don't really like the title though...assuming Romo and agent are being unreasonable compared to Jerry.
I do suspect Romo's camp would like to know if we plan to stop applying old band-aids to the oline disaster. He'd like to be able to live (and walk) to play with his son someday.

or maybe he realizes that Jerruh is NOT going to fix the O line and figures he better get all the money he can while he can still talk without dribbling

Wrong, they are under the cap now after cutting Connor & restructuring Scandrick/Ratliff/Bernadeau contracts'. To get all the draft picks signed & a couple low-end FA's they will cut Free after June 1st. It is time to take 1 more shot with this core in 2013-14 & if it doesn't work out, Garrett will be gone-& Ware,Ratliff,Austin,Witten should be traded for whatever you can get & package those picks in a deal to move up and draft a hopeful franchise QB if Romo can't get the job done.. They may strike a deal with Romo in the next 24 hours or so, just a silly thread to bs.

Going off of how they handle their rookie deals, the team tends to wait on contracts to let the urgency speed the process along. I imagine both sides wanted to wait for the Flacco deal to set the market. From there, you really wouldn't expect either side to commit to anything too soon before FA starts up. Romo's got more leverage the closer he gets to the deadline, and then it's in his interest to get the team as much relief as possible if they plan on doing anything early.

Or, perhaps they want the contract hanging over the start of FA, so they can have it dangling there to cover up for the fact that not much else is going to get done. Then, after a day or so, they'll sign something and the team will use whatever meagre room it has to fill in the roster with a select few B-grade vets.

Either way, there's not going to be more cap space created between now and then. Both sides have all the info they need now if a contract is to be had, it should happen soon enough. Otherwise, we're looking at a year of uncertainty and him playing franchised next season.

That said, I have very little concern we won't find a way to extend him.

I'm with you. If this core group can't make a run this year it's time for a full reboot.

Its possible Romo just wants to see how FA and draft goes and what moves the Boys make before signing.

There pretty much is no Free Agency for the Cowboys without extending Romo

Jerry has some leverage also. He said late last season he will decide when the window is closed. Jerry may chooose to let Romo play his contract out if Romo is wanting too much money. In some ways, looking at the future of the team it would be better.

Well we can't do that until he signs an extension.
