You nailed it, he is not an elite pass rusher, he can get pressure and penetrate but lacks the explosiveness and bend which is a trait elite pass rushers have already.

I do think he could be a solid player, just will have to see how he develops in the NFL.

Reminds me of Tony Tolbert who was 4th round choice drafted by Tom Landry and retired because of hip problems.

So maybe you'd take OO ... in the 2nd @ 60.

Since when does having surgery mean you are forever fragile? This is what I'm trying to understand. If a guy is currently injured and his future is in question it's 1 thing, but I don't understand how you shy away from a guy who just played an entire year with no problems. Are people here doctors with x rays of his hips? If he was being red flagged I think we would have heard about it by now. If actual doctors say his hip is ok then it's good enough for me. What do you think the % of football players who have had some kind of serious surgery before their age 30 season is? It's gotta be way up there.

Scout’s Take: Highly recruited player coming out of high school. Physically can’t draw them up any better than this kid. Had his share of injury problems early in his career with his hips but has checked out fine since. Will line up as the strong side end, which makes him an ideal fit to play on the left side here for the Cowboys. There are snaps where you see him play with strength and power, but not nearly as consistent enough with it. Thought he needed to do a better job of shedding blockers quicker and not staying engaged. Thought there were times where he got stuck along the line. Scheme might limit what he is required to do here because there are snaps where you see him catch the block – then react almost like he was playing as a two gap defensive end in a 3-4. The reason I believe this is because there are snaps where the coaches line him up head up or inside eye of the offensive tackle. Is not as good of a player when he lines up this way. Feel that he needs to be a little wider in his alignment, which would allow him more access up the field. When he manages to get free he shows a nice closing burst and lateral quickness. Not a stiff-moving player. Plays with some bend and flexibility. Has the ability to get around the corner and be disruptive. When he knows it’s a pass, he can explode up the field, extend his arms, dip his shoulder and beat the blocker. When he wants to get push on the pocket, he has the ability to do it. There were snaps where I thought he tackled well, then others where he didn’t wrap up well enough. Could be far more consistent in this area. Fan of the player and the potential of what he could become but there are concerns where his overall play should have been better. Bryan Broaddus

Tony Tolbert was drafted by Jimmy Johnson and his knee cartilage was gone in the latter part of his career - bone on bone before microfracture surgery existed.

Which direction do you prefer? Just curious.

Well, that isn't an easy question for me to answer, and it isn't one that I really can without seeing who is available at our pick. However, I will try to give a relatively short answer.

First off, know that with everything else being equal, I would like for Dallas to add to the defensive line at 27. That is where I would like to grab elite talent for the team. It is a vital unit on a 43 defense and one where I typically like to use high picks at on that side of the ball (you will probably remember me beating the drum last year for Aaron Donald).

However, I think the best available players will be elsewhere besides the DL when Dallas picks in the first. I think DE candidates Fowler, Ray, Beasley, Gregory, and Dupree will be gone already, and DT's Shelton, Armstead, Goldman and Brown will be gone as well. Some of those I would like for Dallas and some I wouldn't... but I think it is likely they're all gone.

I do like Preston Smith but I think 27 will be too early for him (although I'd be ok with it).

As I stated, I'm not crazy about OO (although I could be wrong about him) and as bad as I want to add to the DL in the first, I don't want to reach for one and at this point I would consider OO to be a reach there.

At this early point, the positions that I see still having some very good talent are RB's (they are almost always drafted below their talent level), CB's (I anticipate a couple of good ones there), and LB's (if Kendricks is still available, otherwise, I would stay well away in the first).

RB and LB (in a 43) are usually positions that I want to stay away from in the first because you can find good players for them outside of round 1... but if either one is the clear cut BAP at our pick, I anticipate Dallas going in that direction because they have been sticking BAP since about 2010. I would agree with it.

If they think Gurley or Gordon is clearly the best, then I say do it rather than taking a DE that they have questions about (reach). If it is Kendricks, then I'm good there too.

Right now, if I had to guess at the position that gets taken if they stay at 27, I'd have to say CB. There is a chance that a player like Kevin Johnson or Byron Jones are there and Dallas has them ranked well ahead of any DL prospect left. In that case, they'll take the corner IMO. Also, CB is a premier position that the team has no problem using a premier pick on.

OO is #1 on my want list.

I'm just thankful that he seems to still be in our draft range even after posting freak #'s at the combine.
