I strongly recommend that any parents out there look into the program if their school has one or look into starting one if they don't. There's still time for the '08 competitions.

Check out www.odysseyofthemind.com for more information. For those unfamiliar, think of the old show Junk Yard Wars with no adult assistance allowed.

A great many schools reserve this program for its "gifted" students but they don't realize that the best teams are seldom all "gifted". It rewards creativity and originality, something that's not the exclusive domain of the book smart.

My sister's middle girl was a part of a team 2 years in a row about 6-8 years ago.

I went to her regional finals in Dallas one of those years. I concur w/ StanelyS, there were some really talented and cool stuff displayed by some great kids.

Another note that DC made me think of.

If you think your children may be interested but aren't sure, take them to the local regional competition to have them see what it's all about. Some of the things these children come up with is simply amazing.

Regionals are always looking for help. Contact the regional director in your area and volunteer. No "talent" is needed at all. A great place to get your feet wet in OM is being a timekeeper, starting a stopwatch isn't that difficult, or a doorkeeper, just standing by the entry door so that no one enters during the children's performance.
