Off-season step one: House cleaning

Don't see how. The only starting quality LB on the roster is Overshown. We have zero FSs. Releasing bad players does not create a hole.
Great statement: “Releasing bad players does not create a hole”.

I agree 100%. Releasing bad (and mediocre) players gives us the opportunity to get better, not stay the same.

As I said earlier, too many of us fans get attached to players for various reasons, then somehow forget there are talented players in free agency and the draft that ARE better, if you know what you need and who fits those needs.

Now is the time to prove that this organization is serious about winning again. It’s time to start cleaning house. Time to release players that are not in future plans. Time to let go of guys that either cost too much, aren’t what we need anymore, or are just not good enough.

Who needs to be released?
Here’s a list of players who need to be released for cap savings and/or just aren’t what we need:
  • S Donovan Wilson - hits like a freight train but couldn’t cover his grandma. Designate him a June 1 cut and we save approximately $7 mil.
  • RT Terance Steele - Another guy who should get a June 1 cut. Saves about $13 mil in cap space.
  • S Malik Hooker - Is 30 now and is not the future. Making him a June 1 cut saves around $6 mil in cap space.
  • DE Sam Williams - I believe he is now a free agent but we should just let him walk. Never showed he was capable of fulfilling his potential. Goodbye.
  • LB Logan Wilson - turns 30 this yr. Will not be part of this defensive rebuild. Can save about $6 million with his release.
  • LB Kenneth Murray - he was a joke last year at LB. Pretty sure he was just on a one year deal so…adios KM.
  • DL Solomon Thomas - getting older, costs 3 million next yr…not a lot but he can’t be considered a key cog in our future.
  • S Marquese Bell - every time I see him in the field it reminds me of watching him get trucked over and over in the run game vs the packers in that playoff disaster. He needs to go.
These are just the major names. The Cowboys need not only a talent face lift - especially on defense. They need a complete reset on D.

If JJ is serious about swimming in FA waters, we need to start cutting bait.
Time to churn!!!
- Wilson is a FA
- at $3M no way I'm cutting Thomas unless someone else is brought in. Paid like a backup and is a good one. Good fit for 3-4 also if it goes that route. Key depth guy to rotate in IMO

Looks like it's going that route...judging by the press conference yesterday. I'm more concerned about how they deal with Kenny Clark. I'm guessing they keep Thomas, since he's signed through this year. He is a former first round pick (3rd overall in 2017) who provides good depth. He isn't all-world but he isn't paid to be.

Do

You have two chances. Caleb Downs (long shot) and Dillon Thieneman. Both are chess piece type players. Thieneman "should" be there at 20 if you want him. Problem is that they haven't prioritized the safety position since they drafted Roy Williams (8th overall pick) in 2002. Williams was the last Cowboy safety to make the pro-bowl (2007).
I like both. I’d be fine with either and I think if downs was there they’d take him. But my guess is our first rnd picks will be two of CB, LB, edge. If downs was there then you’d get one of those later. I like Dillon, especially after a small trade down, adding a pick. He’s a good player but don’t think he will be best player at 20 from one of our need positions

Who are we going to play at LB and S after the cuts? Hopefully guys that are better.

You don’t get better sticking with the same players who haven’t gotten you anywhere anyway.

By doing what all the better teams do - get some FA starters and hit on some picks. You don’t get better doing the same things that got you nowhere.
I don't disagree, my point is I don't see Jerry all of a sudden doing something different and actually spending. Last big FA signing was Brandon Carr...

If I could get LB Styles w/ the 12th pick

Can't release Mingo, IMO, b/c if an injury occurs ...
LB Wilson and LB Murray can both go
I would keep DE Williams and DL Thomas for 1 more year if possible
Steele can stay
S Wilson, S Bell, and S Hooker, have to see how the draft goes
Wilson has already been waived and Murray won't be back either.

You are gonna do nothing just replace them with players of the same caliber though. Except you will use the limited resources you have to do it.
How is that? We have exactly one starting quality LB on the roster and he can't stay on the field. Why are you saying they'd be the same quality as Murray?

I’ve never understood this organization’s commitment to keeping the same players around that basically have gotten us nowhere. They seem to fall in love with the players they pick regardless of results.

We can’t get appreciably better with the same cast of characters that has given us a two year record of 14-19-1 and two straight years of no playoffs. We were bad the last two years as our record clearly indicates. Roster churn is so badly needed.

This team needs a spring cleaning. Hopefully it’s coming but I’ll believe it when it happens.

can Wilson play LB

can Wilson play LB
Logan Wilson is already gone. Donovan Wilson is probably about to be because of his contract. He can certainly hit hard but can’t cover anyone, so I expect him to be a casualty soon.

IMO Donovan Wilson is a good example of a guy who represents the past failures of this team and is not the future.
