I just noticed that there is a USB port on the back of my DirecTV HD DVR unit. Does anyone know if there is anything I can do with it? The Tivo has a "Save to VCR" option that doesn't make use of the USB, so I'm not sure what it's even there for? If it matters, I've had the unit for about a year.

From what I have personally learned, manufacturers designed it for future use as a data port. It was also preset to be a closed port. Supposedly, at some point, manufacturers will deem both satellite and cable subscribers 'trustworthy' enough to upgrade the bios on each unit, thus opening up the port to access the DVR hard drive.

Pretty much what I have heard as well.

However, if you have a TIVO set, I know you can buy a wireless USB adapter that will allow you to download the guide and all those other things through the WIFI in your house.

Not sure if it works with other sets but I have seen the TIVO adapter and looked into it a little bit so I know you can do it with them.

This is one of my biggest problems around here,
So I have a bunch of games saved from last year on Hi-def, But I cant seem to figure out how to down load them. So I can burn them, In hi-def of course, I know there is a way to capture them in STD digital but I want it in Hi-def. But them again if I could burn in hi-def what would stop people from downloading movies on there TV and selling them ( very big bootleg DVD problem out there ) I only want to save the cowboy games for myself if anyone has figured this out and wants to be anonymous just pm me any info thanks

From what I understand, the HR20 runs a version of Linux. Adding a hard drive should be easy, you plug in an eSATA (NOT USB) drive and it should work...

Now bear in mind at that point you would lose the local HD on the HR20. Any shows you had saved would no longer be viewable as, I understand it, multiple drives will not seamlessly work as one big drive because it cannot dynamically allow more space to a volume group...

Large drives, such as the Maxtor 750gb are around $169. You can get 1tb model for around $269...

Yes, you will lose your current saved programming, but you will increase your storage capacity by almost 8x...
