Offense sells tickets

Truth be told, now that we are 50 Superbowls in I think it's safe to say there are all sorts of viable ways to win a Championship.

Plenty of examples of great defenses winning with poor offenses.
Plenty of examples (although less of them I think) of great offenses with poor defenses
Everything in between

Right but people react to the present. Whatever just happened, that's the OMGonlywaytodoit!!!

I'm so tired of the defense wins championships narrative.

Also, we can bury the "no team can win after paying a number one receiver" discussion. Thomas is paid as a number one wideout.

How about running the ball doesn't matter. It is all about Passing Efficiently.
Peyton just had a 9.9 QBR

Not to hijack the thread ... but did you guys notice the Super Bowl babies commercial? The last group of Cowboys Super Bowl babies are 20 years old !!!

yea it sucks but hey, Deadskins and Whiners last SB Babies are still older......Best of all, Sheagles SB babies still dont even exist!!

If either team had an offense that could catch the ball and hold onto it and execute a little, we'd be hearing an entirely different story. Carolina doesn't have enough playmakers on offense, and Cam had a weak game, yet the plays were there to blow the game open vs. Denver.

...but DEFENSE wins championships. Proved yet again.

I keep hearing this.... And people keep ignoring the Panthers had the 2nd best defense in football.

No matter who won you could have said this.

But way to try and sound smart and more informed!

Just proves my point even more as the Panthers made it to the Super Bowl with that defense. Thanks for pointing that out.

They also made it to the Super Bowl with the #1 scoring offense as well ;)

Having said that look at what the #1 overall defense did to the #1 scoring offense to your point. Give me a top offense and defense :p

You have to have a good QB and good passing game to win the Super Bowl. You also have to be good at defending the pass. There's plenty of ways to do it. The Saints defense wasn't exactly lights out when they won it. But, when you can build giant leads and score at will, it makes the defense's job easier.

What we need is a more consistent defense. We seem to have a defense that tends to play very well on the road...of all things...and then struggle at home. Then we will have some years where they are good at home, but poor on the road. Or a defense that starts out well, but struggles in the second half of the season or plays well in the first 3 quarters and wilts in the 4th quarter. Just no real consistency.

The defense needs to become great at the basics. It needs to tackle much better. It needs a better last line of defense (safeties) and it needs to be able to play both man and zone well. Once we get these basics down, then we can look to add the bells and whistles and add those key parts to make the defense run high octane. Otherwise we will still have the same inconsistencies and find ways to lose instead of finding ways to win.

YR

The Broncos did not have a good QB or passing game this year.

I don't think their offense was #1 in scoring. The team was yes, but much of that was the defense. 50 turnovers will do that.

It is so much more fun to root for a team that plays smothering defense. When you can just squeeze the life out of opponents, it makes for fun Sundays.
