Before the season began if you had asked me which side of the ball would be more dynamic and stable I'd have said the Defense without even hesitating.
I really like the depth of the personnel on our defense and especially the youth factor that I think means they will only get better. I honestly felt if we did anything this year it would be because the defense stepped up big like in 2003.
My how things have changed since mid season. Stability and play making ability at QB combined with a plethora of weapons has been such a pleasant surprise. Who would have thought our offensive line could block together as a unit? Certainly not me as the season began.
It has me wondering for the first time since Parcells got here what he will focus on in Free Agency and the Draft. I knew year one he was going to go Defense, I just didn't know if it was CB or pass rusher. I wanted the pass rushere but Newman has been all I could ask for.
I knew year 2 we were going to focus on RB. Of course I thought that meant Steven Jackson or Kevin Jones. I've been happy with Julius and thrilled with what Barber brings. Love this combo.
Year 3 there was no doubt in my mind the Draft would focus on the switch to the 3-4. DeMarcus Ware is the most complete LB in the game right now. He does everything well. A force to be reckoned with. I still have big hopes for Burnett and Spears too. Ware is probably my favorite player on the team.
Last year I knew SOLB would be the focus and I still think we got a hell of a good pick. I know we have a bunch here who disagree. They're peeing into a strong wind IMO.
This coming year I have to tell you that at this point I have no idea where we might be looking. Conventional wisdom would say the offensive side of the ball, but given the way the two units have played I'm not all that sure.
If we look Defense it would most assuredly be one of 3 positions, FS, CB, of pass rusher. I think FS or CB are far more likely. If we look offense it has to be either OL or WR.
It's strange how your opinions will change over the course of a season. Of course this is natural. Anyone who never alters their thinking to adjust to the situations presented is a fool.
As strange as it sounds to me right now, I still believe our defense will turn a corner in the next 2 games and be hard to deal with. It's just about 3 or 4 younger players realizing they belong here now and relaxing so they don't have to prove anything. Just go to work.
Patience sucks doesn't it?
