Offense vs. Defense

Before the season began if you had asked me which side of the ball would be more dynamic and stable I'd have said the Defense without even hesitating.

I really like the depth of the personnel on our defense and especially the youth factor that I think means they will only get better. I honestly felt if we did anything this year it would be because the defense stepped up big like in 2003.

My how things have changed since mid season. Stability and play making ability at QB combined with a plethora of weapons has been such a pleasant surprise. Who would have thought our offensive line could block together as a unit? Certainly not me as the season began.

It has me wondering for the first time since Parcells got here what he will focus on in Free Agency and the Draft. I knew year one he was going to go Defense, I just didn't know if it was CB or pass rusher. I wanted the pass rushere but Newman has been all I could ask for.

I knew year 2 we were going to focus on RB. Of course I thought that meant Steven Jackson or Kevin Jones. I've been happy with Julius and thrilled with what Barber brings. Love this combo.

Year 3 there was no doubt in my mind the Draft would focus on the switch to the 3-4. DeMarcus Ware is the most complete LB in the game right now. He does everything well. A force to be reckoned with. I still have big hopes for Burnett and Spears too. Ware is probably my favorite player on the team.

Last year I knew SOLB would be the focus and I still think we got a hell of a good pick. I know we have a bunch here who disagree. They're peeing into a strong wind IMO.

This coming year I have to tell you that at this point I have no idea where we might be looking. Conventional wisdom would say the offensive side of the ball, but given the way the two units have played I'm not all that sure.

If we look Defense it would most assuredly be one of 3 positions, FS, CB, of pass rusher. I think FS or CB are far more likely. If we look offense it has to be either OL or WR.

It's strange how your opinions will change over the course of a season. Of course this is natural. Anyone who never alters their thinking to adjust to the situations presented is a fool.

As strange as it sounds to me right now, I still believe our defense will turn a corner in the next 2 games and be hard to deal with. It's just about 3 or 4 younger players realizing they belong here now and relaxing so they don't have to prove anything. Just go to work.

Patience sucks doesn't it?

Upgrading the defense HAS to start with the DC, everything else is meaningless.

Good post Hos. I have my opinions on this subject. I agree with your assessment on offense. I think we need more top competition at WR and I want another RG candidate. I think we will start there in the draft. I think CB is more likely than FS in the draft (I'm not sure if we would consider a FS in FA).

If we don't fix the RB coverage issue fast, we are going to have to do something in the offseason to fix it. I'll admit I don't know how you fix the kind of recognition errors we are experiencing right now. These problems should not be happening...but they are.

I agree with that... what a mess. I'm thinking that Bradie James is the main culprit.

Speed isn't his strong suit. The FB was his man without a doubt on the TD that got called back due to a penalty. You see him during the entire replay following him down the LOS.

Our defense has a problem of everyone playing on a consistent level, either the LBs are playing great and the DL is playing horrible. Or the front 7 is playing great and the secondary is playing bad. We don't need them all to play on a pro bowl level, just be average our offense will handle the rest.

Offensively, this team needs to begin preparing a young WR to be at least a #2, maybe a solid possession guy, in 2-3 years (which may be a bit less than Terry has left). Also, inasmuch as the OL has been playing well, there will be more asked of this unit, and there needs to be stiffer competition for places on the line. Watch out for a stud on the line next year.

On the other side of the ball, Jason Ferguson has been outstanding, but he will need relief at some point. If there is someone in college who can just eat up a ton of space, guaranteed Bill has video of him in action. But prioroty 1 has to be that FS position. The team has thrown everything behind FS, to no avail. A really good FS would minimise Roy's poor coverage skills.

I sure would like to see if Henry would or could become a FS, and go after a good corner in the draft

I'm with you...I think Henry could & would be a real fine Safety.

Actually if I remember correctly they are doing this on the right side of the defense behind Ware. That would mean the Jack LB or Akin Ayodele is supposed to be covering that spot as opposed to doing what he has been which is pressure upfield. He should be dropping back into that spot. He does that it's a simple contain for little or no yardage.

Well,

first off I think Carp might turn out to be a solid LB one day...but I will still argue you should draft a impact player or as close as you can get with the 1st round selection...and not a player you have to wait 3 or 4 years down the road for...

2nd I am not at all pleased with Julius Jones...think we need better...maybe Jones as the 3rd back...I am hoping we get a shot at Michael Bush (nice size and speed combo)...

3rd I think we need to draft a CB somewhere in this coming draft... and look at running a 3 CB & 1S system... this league is built on the pass and you need CB skills to cover... ..get a big CB like Henry to play the role of the safety replacement

4th unlike most I don't see a need to draft a WR high...I think we got pretty good servicable guys such as Austin, Hurd and Rector...(would like to see them get more time at WR next year.

5th I wouldn't mind drafting a tweener or two and some lineman on both sides of the ball...

depending upon Stanley's development a NT might be in order..

NT has to be a major consideration too.

I'm sick of Rivera...Steinbach PLEASE!

We need to draft Flo's replacement.

We need to draft a QB somewhere this year.

I'd say CB, LB, WR and G/C are on our shopping list on draft day.

And, sorry Hos, but I'd draft a kicker.

I wouldn't because one just as good as someone who gets drafted can be had as a UDFA.

How does Steinbach play and how big is he? I think he only weighs 290 lbs which isn't very big at all. I really like Dockery from the Commanders. He is 6'6" and weighs about 320 right now. Very nimble on his feet for such a big man. As for Adams, I think Dallas can get a good tackle in the 2nd round. He can sit and learn behind Adams. WR is a must. Hopefully a reciever falls and Dallas can trade up for one. Holmes didn't go until the 25th pick so hopefully lightning strikes twice. Not sure if TO will be here next year.

The type of blocking scheme we run, Steinbach is perfect...we pull our guards and they have to block in space.
