9/19/05 - HOUSTON) - The Texans have fired offensive coordinator Chris Palmer and replaced him with offensive line coach Joe Pendry, ESPN's Chris Mortensen has learned.

The Texans have managed just two offensive touchdowns under Palmer's watch. Pendry also will work with QB David Carr. Steve Marshall takes over as offensive line coach. Marshall had been assisting Pendry.

Carr, a former No. 1 overall pick by the Texans, has struggled in two games this season, throwing three interceptions and just one touchdown and has been sacked 13 times already in 2005. He has completed 25 of 47 pass attempts for 237 yards.

The Texans' other top skill players on offense also are struggling as Houston has started the season 0-2 and has scored just 14 points in the two games.

Top wide receiver Andre Johnson has caught just seven passes and doesn't have a touchdown in 2005, while running back Domanick Davis has rushed for just 107 yards on 29 attempts in the two losses.

Pendry once worked as offensive coordinator under Dom Capers at Carolina. He was fired from that job.

Palmer was beginning his fifth season as the Texans' offensive coordinator. The Texans had a breakout offensive season in 2004, setting club records in first downs (300), total yards (5,128), rushing yards (1,882), passing yards (3,246), completion percentage (60.7), touchdowns (37) and points (309). Before becoming the Texans' offensive play-caller, Palmer was the first head coach of the expansion Cleveland Browns, but was fired after the 2000 season.

Capers is lucky it wasn't him. It probably will be him after the season, if they continue to lose.

The General Manager needs to be canned. They will probably use the first pick of next years draft on a prospect Offensive lineman out of North-Eastern Montana State.

Well that's hilarious, most of the lack of offence can be blamed on the OL.....and replace Palmer w/ the OL coach?????????

Capers was probably told to fire him or get the axe.

No doubt. Expectation here in Houston were high this year now fans are starting to talk about the Rockets basketball season. LOL

I predicted four years before the Houston fans turned on the Texans. Booing yesterday proved me right. :lmao:

I can't remember who they drafted in the 1st this year. Reminder please? How has he played? In fact, how have their drafts rated on the whole since they came into the league. At least as far their 1st round picks, it's hard to fault the selections of Carr, Johnson and Robinson last year. I also wonder how good a head coach Capers really is. He seemed to follow a similar trajectory with Carolina. A hot start (or at least a promising one) followed by a steady decline. Perhaps Carr will be his new 'Kerry Collins'.

It was that DT out of Florida State... something Johnson I think... I don't know how good he is, but I remember Alex Barron and Jammal Brown were still around when they had their original pick

They have bigger concerns with Carr, He's getting to be put in the busts category. Their offense has been dull.

part of the reason is their O-Line is awful. Carr took 76 sacks his rookie year. that's almost 5 per game. it's amazing that Domanick Davis has been as successful as he has been behind that line.

Every team gets booed from time to time. The Texan fans have been booing the offensive line for three years. This is nothing new.

Yeah, I noticed that too. Makes no sense at all. Personally, I don't think Carr is a franchise qb, I even heard a rumour that he doesn't see well down field. I watched against the Jets last year and he was completely clueless, he threw 2 balls directly into coverage for picks when he had time to throw. He was also terrible against the Browns last year in their season finale, and at home at that. I think he is type to play good only against weak defenses.

I certainly think Carr has regressed over the past two season. The question is Why? a. lack of talent. b. OL. c. Offensive scheme d. has lost confidence.

Could be 1 or 2 of the above or all of the above.
