Offensive line is key

The best trait a player can have is availability and no matter which body part we are talking about is neither here nor there. The facts are he has missed key games and stretches over the last couple years. You really want him to hold the team hostage again? Its pure fantasy to try to sell yourself on the notion he will be available for a full 16 game schedule AND play at an elite level. Last elite year he had was 2014. The injury bug has bitten him and these things linger. Its fool hearty to think THAT changes this year.
Disagree again. Tyron wrecked this league in 2015 (probably the best offensive lineman in the NFL that year, at least he was per PFF) and had a very good year last year. Going forward, even if the best we get from him is very good/good, then we're set at LT.

I agree on the later rounds. I wouldn't be opposed to taking a tackle in the 1st round if, say Connor Williams, is the only player left that you've assigned a 1st round grade to. But prior to the Tyron Smith pick, the best Cowboys' LTs in history were not 1st round picks. Flozell was a 2nd, Erik Williams was a 3rd I believe, Rayfield Wright was a late round as a TE. I think I would rather trade back and pick up another 2nd or 3rd and pick a backup that can be a starter.

Larry Allen was a 2nd round pick, was actually a decent OT, but then they moved him inside to OG.

Amen on Green..lord he was a hot mess. I believe Cowboyron coined the term "turnstiled."...which was his description he had on Green 2 years ago after a preseason game against the Rams. He and I saw this coming back then. It was a failed experiment from the start. The kid cant play in the NFL...cut him already. Bell...I dunno..he's a body..and at times was ok..so for me I rather hang on to him another year or until we find a swing tackle thats better.

If they both, or either one are still here, then maybe the new OL coach can get them to be serviceable until they can be replaced.

Larry Allen was a freak of nature lol. Its very hard to compare a player to him. Almost isnt fair. I dont think we will ever see another Larry Allen type again in the NFL. He was special. LOVE TYRONS freakish ability...but he hasn't the flexibilty to move inside. But I just think it would be prudent from a team standpoint to protect yourself.Drafting the best available oline man that has the flexibility to play left tackle is a top priority..or it should be. We will have this same issue next off season if its not addressed.

If they are both still here Garrett has to be fired along with the new oline coach. We cannot risk another season like the last one getting Dak killed.

Good point, I didn't remember he was original a tackle.
Larry Allen was one of a kind player. I sure miss having a guy like him on the line. All I know is Dallas wins and plays for a Lombardy when we have stout olines along with a great RB. Gotta get back to Cowboy football this year. It begins this week in Mobile. Go find an olineman JJ.

It used to be a proven thing....that hasn't been the case the past ten years....drafting Olinemen in the first has been pretty hit or miss.

Right. Maybe OL is the safest in terms of bust %, but it's not 100% safe. The best antidote is to do you homework, not reach, and have more picks to mitigate the impact if yours is the bust (for whatever reason).

exactly. Its a proven thing taking an olineman in round 1. Its a safe pick PLUS we get a 10 year starter out of it. The bust factor is almost zero.
i agree id rather do that at 19, than reach for a WR or Defensive player that may amount to not much.

Can't afford another high pick OL...Paul Alexander has to work his magic by turning players into serviceable depth/starters.

Cowboys win and win big when our trenches are running on all cylinders. Last year we were running on 5 instead of 8 cyl. Its beating a dead horse, but we need to get back to basics on the oline.Which is why I think we made the change we did in getting Alexander...a power run block scheme he runs.

why not? Alexander still needs good players. Cooper is sporatic at best..Tyron can't be counted on healthwise. Collins has only played right tackle 1 year and that was up and down. We have some fixin to do,and its more than coaching. I DO like the fact that Alexander brings a friendly power run scheme to that oline group. Thats very fitting for the guys we have.

Does anybody else watch the rest of the NFL?? O line play is putrid across the board. Aside from the horrendous Chaz Green performance I don’t see how anyone thinks the o line was a deciding factor in any of our other losses. Our line is still top 3, 5 at worst.

I agree that we need more/better depth, but the o line isn’t the problem of this team at all. I agree that drafting an OT that can play guard is the smartest move, but wouldn’t invest anything higher than our 2nd rounder into the position.

And didn’t Tyron miss games this year because of his knee?? Don’t understand all the doom and gloom about his back unless you’re a doctor and have access to his medical records.

I want our Oline to be better than it was this past season but we had the best Oline in the NFL from 2014-2016 and have nothing to show for it. We can't keep using high picks on the OL....not against drafting another but need to find guys in later rounds and get coaches to do what they're paid to do.

The strength of Cowboy football in the SB years has always been the oline, period. Even as recently as 2016 and 2014. Its no coincedence that we had a sub par year this year. My take is we need to go draft a stud starting left tackle,no matter what it takes. Its clear as crystal to me that Tyron will never be that guy again(2016). He's hit and miss. I need your ideas guys. Mine is move Tyron to right tackle preserving him a couple more years, moving collins back to his natural left guard spot, making Cooper a swing guard,Bell the swing tackle, and then drafting a guy to start at left tackle. I am not a fan of Tyron at left tackle. He held the team hostage last year.Lets go back to Cowboy football. ITS PROVEN TO WORK. Fix the trenches. If we draft a wideout at 19 its a bad mistake.Dak will be on his back just like last year.THOUGHTS?

They may not be able to find a suitable backup in free agency but the draft could. Here's hoping Connor Williams is an option at #19; he would start right away at guard and can provide quality backup play at both tackle spots.

Teams that can stay relatively healthy in the trenches usually win and are playing in Jan. Look at this years SB. Yes they had injuries..but they had great depth as well. Got to have good talent in the trenches...not scrub back ups like Chaz Green.

Agree with most of what you said but I don't think our line was top 5 in 2017...more like somewhere in the top 10-12 range.
