Offensive line looks better with Leary

There is no way I'm the only one noticing that our line looks a lot better with him instead of Collins. I know Collins is the big name and all that, but I would not mind re-signing Leary and dealing Collins.

Or...

Would it be smart to move Collins to right tackle and get rid of free? Tyron, Leary, Fred, Martin and Collins sound lethal.

Thoughts?

I think having Smith back is what boosted this offense today far more in the run game. I feel like Leary was just above average two years ago and you could always see he was a far less talent than those that are surrounding him.

Collins has far more upside than Leary and I doubt their play is that much different from one another, but then again, I haven't evaluated the O-line in depth. I let Leary walk and get his big contract elsewhere.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing. I see Green as the RT next year and the team is playing great with Leary at OG. I think the best value for Collins at this point would be a trade. He has a ton of talent but is still inconsistent, if you could get a premium pick for him in the offseason I would make the trade.

Collins has upside to replace free at right tackle but Leary is the better guard

Zeke also didn't run very well the first two weeks of the year. Not really fair to blame Collins.

It does, but I also wonder how much of a difference we're seeing is because we're not having to face divisional rivals.

No matter the team, we really haven't mauled anyone in the NFCE with consistency.

what about Leary's knee?

Its a variable, for sure. But there are other players who had ten year careers in the NFL with the same condition. To use a baseball analogy, I think Leary is more of a dependable doubles hitter but Collins is a guy that will hit some tape measure Home Runs but strike out a ton. I think Collins is a lot more inconsistent than most posters here think.

It would be smart but not possible.

Leary isn't going to negotiate with the cowboys this offseason. He will chase dollars the cowboys won't give him.

The guy is a ticking time bomb, he will decline faster than a normal player his age due to his condition. Let's enjoy potentially his last year being an elite pro and watch a team like the Commanders pay him big money next season when he starts declining!

Teams like the Bengals will offer Leary good money. We can't afford to pay all the linemen 8-12 million a year each. We really shouldn't even pay more than two players that, but we may have too.

Collins is probably more talented, but Leary has the experience necessary to succeed at this level.

Leary will be 28 in April. He's hit his ceiling, he's not getting better than he is now. Good guard, but he simply doesn't have the upside Collins has. It's also not as though Collins has played poorly either, while he graded out the lowest last year with the offensive line, it was mainly due to how well the rest of them played (Leary also graded out this way in 2014)

So, it's not as though there will be some huge drop off once Leary is gone. The only difference is, we have a young guard with tremendous potential. Leary will get his big contract somewhere else, there are plenty of teams int his league in need of a solid guard, I can name about 10 teams right off the top of my head in desperate need for one. He's getting big contract somewhere else, fellas.

Collins is inconsistent and that's because of the number of games he's played vs Leary. Collins is a superior talent but Leary right now is probably a tad bit better overall.

That doesn't mean you trade what may be one of the most talented interior linemen to come along in awhile.

I've posted the stats and charts on developing linemen multiple times. I guess they just bet ignored or written off. It's not a great surprise to learn it takes a couple of years for the vast majority of linemen to learn the game.

On a slight side note I wouldn't be surprised to see Chaz compete with Free at RT next year. Free is a UFA after next year with a 6.5M contract 2017. Unless someone falls in their lap then I expect them to renegotiate his contract this offseason for 2017-2020 with enough guarantee to entice the signing and have an out after two years. The third tackle almost always plays due to injuries and he's good enough.

Their oyher option, if they trust Chaz enough, is to draft another tackle and look at other options which gives them 3 tackles next year while developing another.

Leary has for whatever reason always flown under the radar in terms of the amount of hype or praise he gets. He really is a beast in the run game. I can still clearly remember the game winning TD back in Seattle, 2014, where Leary took out several defenders by himself.

At this moment, I would offer Leary a contract. Not a break the bank one, but a decent one.

It's noticeable to me. Leary's run blocking is superior to Collins. Nobody is saying Collins doesn't have the higher upside. We get that. But Leary has this group looking like it's dominant 2014 form. Good for him as he will parlay this season into a nice payday from another OL needy team.
