As long as Jake Butt's knee exam at the combine doesn't show any issue with his meniscus in his knee, I would have no problem with him being selected in, say, the third round. With the surgical techniques and rehab science improving, he could be off of PUP and ready to play by the 7th game without an issue.
I wouldn't even mind doing it in the second, tbh. Would, theoretically, eliminate the gap between Witten and the next TE.
Dont be so sure about the we wont draft him part. IMO if he lasts to our pick, he would likely be the top value and be the most likely pick
I don't see him there at 30 or whatever.

I hope we come away with 1 of these Tight Ends in this upcoming draft.

We'll most likely have to use a 1st or 2nd round pick to get it done but I think it's worth it for our offense.
I agree. TE is the biggest need on offense. If the Alabama TE is an all around player. I would draft him at 28.

I want a CB or DE in the draft but i'd rather have a legit TE or Offensive Tackle over a ho hum corner or DE.

I'm willing to roll with Witten, Swain, Gathers and a 4th or a 5th round TE next season. It's a deep TE draft so I think we can wait till day three and should make a real effort to address the defense (or wr) the first 2 days.

I agree. If there is a GOOD DE or CB at our pick fine, but dont waste the pick out of desperation either.

IF Jake Butt falls all the way to our 3rd round pick, then you have seriously consider him. Even if it means letting him take his time to recover and gain the strength needed on IR. Witten said he would be back next year so an immediate replacement is not needed.

I like Jake Butt as well as but there's no way I'm taking another player in the 2nd round I likely won't get production out of early. He injured his knee just last month.

Leggett is an interesting option; good size and clearly a talented pass catcher. Unlike Howard, Leggett wasn't asked to block in-line at Clemson, but that shouldn't be construed as he can't.

I don't feel that TE is as big a priority as some in this thread. I just have a gut feeling that Rico will deliver, but more importantly, the staff seems to think he can deliver.

Would draft Drake's Eric Saubert if both were available at that pick. Saubert could even be had later.

If the Cowboys were to win the SB, then Witten may just retire. But, I think he would likely come back for one more year.

A team should take need into consideration while drafting, but it should be for need two or more years from now. Don't draft for immediate needs because you will reach for players. And, does anyone really know what you need? A team could see a large number of injuries at a certain position in camp which no one can foresee. Just draft BPA and let the players compete for the playing time.

Amen to that.....drafting for immediate need is football suicide.

Desperate defensive needs aside, I think OJ Howard would be a piece that paid dividends for years. Dak's strength is short to intermediate throws. This guy stresses a defense in those ways. Witten has basically said this is his last year and all he is good for is underneath stuff now.

Everything you said makes perfect sense and I wouldn't be too upset if Howard is our pick, but with this draft being so top heavy on the DL and CB, I would hope we take advantage of the situation. It's also a pretty deep draft for TEs and although there would be a drop off in talent if we waited till the mid rounds to select one, I think we can wait a year for the TE to develop whereas we need defensive players that are polished and can contribute from day one.

This type of talk is absolutely insane. Insane.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Yes let's keep drafting offense with premium picks and somehow the defense will magically get better.

Insane.

I am intrigued by Njoku but I dont think he could block me, and doubt he lasts to 60.

We need defense.. All things equal I want defense. I just don't want a ho hum defensive player over a bigtime offensive player.

Tight end is more crucial in this offense than ever before with the zone run scheme.

Zeke getting the edge, a vertical threat to take away a safety, and just the fact that Dak likes throwing to TEs is enough of a reason to want 1.

A young stud TE does a ton for this offense.

We gotta have a do it all guy. If you can't set the edge on run plays then you're useless to us unless you're the next Jimmy Graham.
