Ok guys, i think i have found our next great DE since George Andrie

ok guys this is going way way back, but I think i have found our next great de since george andrie, if any of you guys are that old, he was pretty darn good for a LDE,
14b DE Brian Johnston, Gardner-Webb? 6-5, 280, SR, 4.65 is another D1AA two-way DE with good size and surprising athleticism. Indeed, the 280-pounder reportedly runs in the mid-4.6 range over 40 yards; Johnston also has a quick first step off the snap and has a great change of direction. He also his hands well to shed blockers and shows good lateral pursuit. Overall, Johnston had 78 tackles in 2006 and was his conference?s leader in sacks the past couple of seasons including last fall when he had 8 sacks; he was also credited with 6 other tackles for loss, as well as 23 QB hurries.

this guy might even be big enough to play NT too, kinda tall for a nose tackle but i was thinking this should be a make or break it year for marcus spears;

i believe this guy could go in the 2nd to 3rd round, and we all know you build defenses with top defensive linemen, our first # 1 draft choice i am hoping is mcfadden, our 2nd # 1 probably a wr, then with our 2nd or 3rd draft choice take this guy, just that big 6-5, 280 with 4.65 in 40 is awesome.

George Andrie was one of the most underrated players ever for us. He went to 5 straight Pro-Bowls from 1965-1969 and led the team in sacks almost every year he played for us except for a couple. His last season, when his back was really hurting him, was tough to watch but he was a great player who never got his due.

1) His numbers are good, not great, and that's at the I-AA level...

2) Be wary of preseason reports that say so and so "reportedly" runs in the mid-4.6 range... those players often wind up running in the 4-7-4.8 range when they're put on the clock before scouts (like at the combine, or a Pro Day workout)...

I do like the 78 tackles from a DE, and the 23 QB hurries... this tells me that he's an active player... so while I've expressed some reservations, this is a player I had not heard of that I'll be adding to my watch list for this season...

Maybe if he puts on 15-20 pounds... but if he really does have the kind of speed that GBN is saying he does, why would you want to move him inside, where he wouldn't be able to take full advantage of that speed??

i am aware that at listing speed,most of times if reported a guy running 4.65 their actually running a 4.75 from small schools at least, now and then they do run that, but most likely a little slower but not much from what is reported.

i was thinking since he is already 280, first try him at LDE, if he isnt great at that, and if marcus spears doesnt work out, but if marcus spears does work out, and he can put on about 20 pounds of muscle, try him at NT, we will need a young impact NT i am thinking, jason fergueson cant last forever, and to my mind with the 3-4 defense you need a star player their to occupy the center and a guard to make your 3-4 defense great, even with players playing one gap.

im just thinking say this guy is really good, but hardly unheard of, he could be a steal in the 2nd -3rd round, so keep an eye on him you know

I think some schools will ***** the raw numbers to help their players catch the scouts' eyes, but some schools try to be scrupulously honest... those that do exaggerate those numbers don't really do their players a favor, because sooner of later their draft-eligible prospects are gonna have to weigh in, and perform drills, in front of the scouts...

im just thinking say this guy is really good, but hardly unheard of, he could be a steal in the 2nd -3rd round, so keep an eye on him you know

We have many underrated players, but you may be right about Andrie...

I know Andrie was very good, but to say we haven't had comparable DE's since him is a little innaccurate in my mind - and to at this point suggest a small school college player may be better than Martin, Too Tall, Haley, etc. is WAY premature.

no i wasnt saying that this guy is better than charles haley, or harvey martin, what i am saying this guy might be a steal at LDE, in 2nd to 3rd round or so, and we do need a good strong LDE if Marcus Spears doesnt work out, thats what I am saying,

that we spend our 1st draft choice on McFadden, our # 2nd # 1 on a WR impact player, then either our 2nd round draft choice or our 3rd draft choice on this guy if he is any good.

remember now, the giants got Ola whats his name in 2nd round, so was strahan i think.

then if this guy is any good, and can put on 20 pounds or so, without losing any real speed, then he possibly could be a good NT, we will need a good NT in a year or so, jason fergueson cant last forever.

You said he would be the next great one since George Andrie, which is to say that Andrie was our last great one, so to be the next great one he would have to be better than everyone that came after Andrie.

Don't think they'll move an effective pass rushing DE to NT fulltime. Certainly could use someone like that in nickel and dime packages inside though. Sounds like an interesting small college player. If he can really move like that then he'll get plenty of attention; at least for awhile.

Plus he's only 280 pounds - he would be 10 pounds lighter than our lightest DE.

, im thinking of what phillips said about this type of defense and nt position, he said he would rather have a quicker smaller dt, than a huge one like jamaal williams with san diego,

thats why i think if this kid is any good, and he can put on 20 to 25 pounds, keep his speed down to about 4.9 with added weight and strenght, then he might be the answer for us as NT, if he doesnt play LDE.
