Considering that OLine is the biggest question mark on the team, I recorded the game and watched every play of the touchdown drive in slow motion multiple times just to see how and what each lineman did on each play. Here is my breakdown of it. If you saw something different, let me know and I'll look at it again.

1st Play, Second Offensive series. Ball on Cowboys 11 yard line. JJ run right.
Columbo and Rivera block down on DT. Gurode blocks DT. Whitten pushes DE out. Fasano, from the fullback position, leads JJ, but hits Gurode's guy. Whitten can't block them both, and DE and Linebacker make the tackle after a two yard gain. Adams and Kosier did their part. Give Fasano a boo-boo on this one.

2nd Play- Romo dump-off pass to JJ. JJ nifty run for a first down. Pass blocking by the line. Columbo and Gurode both stonewall their guys. Kosier is helping Gurode. Adams gets beat to inside, Kosier sees it and hits the guy as he is going past Adams. Kosier knocks the guy down. Rivera is getting pushed into the backfield by a bullrush. Rivera stops the guy when he jumps to try to bat down Romo's pass. After JJ caught the ball and started running, Columbo was there trying to block downfield. Gurode also got there, but late. No other Olinemen in the picture at the end of the play.

3rd Play-JJ 4 yard run to right side. Could have been more. Kosier pulls right. Gurode and Rivera block down and seal inside. Whitten blocks DE out. Columbo gets one of the LBs. Kosier and Fasano, again as the FB, lead into a big hole. Both make contact with defenders, but one of the LBs comes in clean and makes the tackle. Not sure whose guy he was, but I would bet the rookie Fasano should have gotten him. JJ could have gotten at least another 5 yards.

4th Play-Romo's 21yard completion to Glenn. Two TE set. Two WR. JJ lone back. Seattle stunts its left DE inside. Columbo stays at home but reacts late to blitzing linebacker looping around. But, Columbo stayed on his feet and punched the guy just enough to shove him off balance and Romo steps up past the blitzing LB. (Bledsoe is probably sacked here.) As Romo stepped up, Columbo, who had kept his feet moving goes by him and nails the LB as he trys to come back at Romo from behind. Romo was untouched and threw a good pass to Glenn.

5th Play- JJ Sweep Left, no gain. Strong Left, Fasano as FB. Kosier and Adams pull right. Whitten blocks down on DE. Kosier cut blocks one LB to the ground. Adams and Fasano are too close together. Fasano gets in front of him and blocks, but Adams hits nobody. JJ slips trying to cut back inside. On the right side, Gurode stops his guy, but gets no push off the line. (Darby is quite a load for one man to try to move.) Rivera drives his guy 4 yards off the line. Columbo dives at the legs of one of the DLmen. I think it is the guy that Rivera was blocking. (It looked like an illegal chop block to me, but no-call.) The DE on the right side slides down the line and would have made the play if JJ had stayed on his feet. I think JJ should have stayed with the play behind Adams instead of trying to cut it up when he did.

6th play- 8 yard pass to Hurd. Strong left, both WR on right side. Romo rolls right and throws a quick pass to Hurd. OLine does well moving right and nobody come close to Romo. Part of that may be due to the fact that it was a quick play, but the best part was that none of the defenders were unblocked.

7th play- 3rd and 2. Strong right, Fasano at TE, Whitten flanks tight on Fasano's hip. Polite at FB. Hurd split left. Adams stops his guy cold. Gurode gets no push, but doesn't get pushed back. Gurode eventually turns his guy and puts him on his back. Kosier chips Gurode's guy and slips off at the MLB, but whiffs. Rivera and Columbo get no seal or movement on the right side and the the DL and LBs on the right collapse into the "hole". Polite nails a LB who got penetration and JJ slipped sideways through a tiny crease for the first down. Ugly play, but it was a short yardage conversion. (Spags makes a fool of himself calling for the long fieldgoal attempt without waiting to see if JJ made the first down.)

8th Play- Flo's facemask grab play. Pass play that was called back. Gurode, Kosier, Columbo all stop their guys cold. Rivera gets pushed back, but does manage to keep his guy off of Romo. Adams gets beaten badly by a speed rush and grabs the guys facemask.

9th Play-Strong Left-JJ sweep left. Gurode stops the DT at the line. Kosier slides left but doesn't hit anybody or anything. Fasano as TE blocks down on DE. Adams pulls around Fasano to lead the sweep and blocks the LB out, but MLB is in the hole and JJ can't cut back in so he stays outside, he beats the LB around the corner, but the safety and the MLB are there to stop the play after a 2 yard gain. Rivera and Columbo kept their guys out of the play. My guess would be that the MLB is the guy Kosier was supposed to block.

10th Play- Romo scramble. 2 TE, 2 WR set. DE lines up outside Whitten on right. Good OL call by Gurode. Kosier pulls on the snap and picks up the DE on the right as Whitten runs his route. JJ helps Kosier. Gurode, Rivera, Columbo take the other three DLmen and stop them cold. Fasano stays in to block, and blocks the DE around Romo. Adams has nobody to block but keeps his head and feet moving and eventually moves back to protect Romo from the defenders behind him. Romo has a good pocket, no pressure, and lots of time, but the clock in his head is ticking so he tucks it and runs.

11th Play- False start Rivera

12th Play- Neutral zone infraction Seattle.

13th Play- Seatlle was offsides, but the play continued. Screen pass to JJ.
Initially it was set up very well. Gurode, Rivera, and Kosier let their guys slip through, JJ is in the right spot, and it looks good. JJ had to turn around and jump to catch the ball. For some reason, Rivera turns his back to the defense and looks at JJ. As JJ catches the ball, Rivera trys to start moving again but as he turns back around, JJ steps on his foot cutting right. (I'm presuming JJ is cutting to avoid the guy Rivera should have been blocking.) Hurd and Glenn are there blocking DBs, but the play has broken down and JJ is just trying to gain positive yards. Gurode knocks down a defender but because JJ has bounced outside, the guy still manages to him down. Kosier whiffs on a block. Rivera hits nobody.

14th Play- Romo to Whitten pass for a first down. Pass blocking was good. Four man rush. Kosier stopped his guy. Rivera's guy started slipping loose, but Gurode slid over and helped. Some pressure from both DEs. Columbo stayed between the defender and Romo. Adams overplays the outside rush and the DE starts slipping inside toward Romo. If Romo had held the ball another half second, this might have been a sack.

15th Play- 2 TE, 2 WR set. JJ run off-tackle right for 3 yards. Whitten blocks down on the DE, Columbo pulls right, Fasano seals backside LB. Crayton blocks CB out. Gurode, Kosier, and Adams contain the back side. Columbo blocks OLB out, Rivera gets out on MLB, but doesn't get him blocked. MLB and Safety fill th hole and make the tackle. If Rivera gets the MLB, I think this play goes for another 4 yards.

16th Play- Play action, roll right. quick pass to Whiten for 4 yards. Rivera blocks DT down, Columbo whiffs on DE and Romo throws the ball under pressure.

17th Play- 2 TE set. Tight formation, with both WR flanked 3 yards off the TEs. Seattle has 10 defenders within 7 yards of the ball. Fasano in motion right, 4 receivers go out. Gurode and Rivera hold their ground. Kosier gets pushed back. Columbo and Adams take DEs deep around. Romo steps up and could run, but sees Hurd who has come all the way across the defense from left to right flat. Romo flips the ball out and Hurd makes a good one-handed catch.

18th Play- JJ run middle. 4 yards. 2 TE set. Columbo pulls. Whitten blocks down on DE. Rivera gets stood up and pushed back. Gurode turns his guy out, but gets pushed back and down. Adams blocks his guy out. Columbo leads through the hole, but hits nobody. Kosier gets on one of the LBs. Fasano gets into the mix, but doesn't really help much. The DTs both get a hand on JJ's ankles and the LBs finish the tackle. Another ugly play, but still gained 4 yards.

19th play- TD pass to Crayton. Play action pass. Gurode, Rivera, Columbo block perfectly. Kosier helps Gurode. Adams gets beat to the inside. Romo's quick set and release is the only reason there was a touchdown instead of a sack on the play.

Some other observations. Columbo moves well for a big guy. He pulled on a lot of plays. He keeps his balance and his feet moving most of the time. But, he is occasionally suseptible to a speed rush and sometimes isn't sure who to block in space (that is probably just a lack of experience). Adams is, as always, weak against speed rushers. Rivera got pushed around too much. Gurode did very well. Kosier was generally good, with occasional lapses. Fasano looked lost and couldn't figure out who to hit when he was the FB. Whitten was consistently good.

Peterman was playing Right Guard with the second unit. Last year BP said Left guard was all he could play. Peterman is weak on pass blocking. Procter whiffed a lot. McQuistan had ups and downs. Petiti, I didn't watch much. Johnson was not as strong as Gurode in the middle.

This is where I worry. If we lose Kosier or Rivera (who depending upon who you ask, are terrible), we are in deep deep trouble.

I am hoping we get some options here via trade. I have no idea who, I just know either of these two will not cut it and if we end up starting Gurode, we will need at least one player who we can feel secure that could handle the job.

Couple other things real quick. On the first play it was Witten that was pushed backwards into the running lane clogging up the hole not giving Fasano a chance to do anything. Can't really blame Witten as it was two defenders pushing him back.

On the 3rd play Gurode should have moved from the DT to the DE who he let run right past him. He knew the play was coming up right behind him and he just let the DE run by while he was barely even on the DT. This is the major criticism of Gurode--he locks onto one player and can't move to make other blocks.

You're right about the 5th play. If JJ could have got to the outside shoulder of Adams (I know he has the speed to get there) he could have picked up 5+ yards. This highights the "overcoached" theme with JuJo. Instead of using his speed and agility to make plays he looks like he's just wrapping the ball up, putting his head down and plowing into defenders, getting nowhere of course.

So you would prefer he dance around and lose yardage?

The only back who could do that with regularity and still "make plays" was Barry Sanders. Jones is nothing close to that. The general idea is move the chains and get positive yardage and I am sure that has been spelled out to Jones. If that is "overcoaching" so be it.

In his best performances, Jones hasn't done anything different other than enjoy better blocking. If that improves, you will see the results.

No, I would prefer a happy medium like his first season. He has incredible speed and an uncanny juke move that I wish he'd use more often.

Too me, it sounds like this unit can be servicable once they all start to gel. Probably one reason why Parcells wants to figure out who his starters are and get them plenty of playing time together.

This is a great point. For what it's worth, the Oline could have been much worse. If there's nowhere to go but up, then we should all be optimistic.
