Hatcher is straight tearing it up!!!! It's a shame, but I don't think our salary cap situation will allow us to extend him.

Sorry, no long term deal for a 31 year old DT
have we learned nothing from Rat and Spencer?
Give him a first round tender and let another team team pay him while we walk away with another rd 1 pick

I don't think it works like that. I think Dallas will get a compensatory pick, and it might be like a 4th rd at best.

I think his age may play a factor. It might not with Jerry but I think there is a possibility that they might decide that a DT about to be 32 isn't worth a long term big money extention when we've got so many holes to fill in both the D-Line and Oline.

Remember we likely won't have Waters back next year so we're going to need more O-Line help now as well and our safety situtation still isn't what you'd want it to be. Add that to the fact that you're going to have to extend Dez...yeah I think Hatcher might just be out.

I like Hatcher a lot.. but this post by Visionary is straight up common sense. We should have done this with Spencer last year. We never make the right moves with players towards the end of their careers and it keeps us at .500

He's an unrestricted free agent, so those rules don't apply. He can sign with anyone and the NFL will award us with a compensatory pick if he goes elsewhere, given we won't likely be getting better players in FA ourselves.

I like hatch too but itd be dumb to resign him.
Not for the right price. If you can get like a 3 year $12 mil deal (not that I think he'll go for that), you should absolutely do it. The guy is going to end up with like 10 sacks this year playing DT.

This one is difficult, I think. He's no Ratliff who was already on the decline when Jerry made that stupid extension. On the other hand, I don't trust Hatcher to be worthy of big money two or three years into a new deal. But he's certainly a very good player right now, and next year too, I guess. On top of that he's one of the leaders on defense.

Hmm.

OK, did not know that
so we can only tender RFAs?

i still would not sign him to a long-term deal

Although it is a scary thought to throw money at age, we may not have any alternative. Three of the four line positions without a quality starter/rookie would be a risk.

I would simply let him take the franchise money we have earmarked for Spencer the last two years. Absolutely no to a long term extension.

Of course id resign him for a small contract but hes looking for a huge payday. He came up after sack doing the pay me gesture. Maybe franchise him depending on how our draft goes but absolutely no long term contract.

We have a big problem on the dline. We didnt just lose ratliff and spencer for the season...we probably lost them for their careers. Losing hatcher too will hurt big time. I agree about the problems extending a 31 year old, normally i would hate doing it...but we might not have much of a choice.

A: We need to stop giving big contracts to guys that are 31 and above. That is why we are where we are. A handful of aging vets sucking up the bulk of the cap (some not even on the team), a ton of 1st and second year players that are borderline NFL players and only a few good players in their prime.
B: If he tore it up for one more play and standing there watching Stafford abuse them they would have won.

Good DTs command up to $10m/year. I wish Hatch could be had for $4m/year but I don't think it is possible if he continues on his pace of 12+ sacks this season -- that's rarified air for a DT.

There will be a discount due to his age, however, I can't see him getting less than a 3-4 year at $8-9m/year from somebody out there.

I don't see that happening for a guy who will be 32 when next year starts, unless its only a one or two year deal.

And, not for nothing, there are only 10 DTs making at least 6 million this year, and just three making over 10.

We will have the benefit of Texas not having a state income tax.
