God Forbid we lose D Ware for the season, we are screwed. Philips and his attacking D be damned. Any other spot on D, we lose a starter and we can still manage to go deep in the playoffs.

Carp is okay but he will never be dominate... I think most here are just hoping he can be a solid 4-6 sack a year, run stopping plug at the OLB position. He will be good because he is tough and smart but lacks the quickness, speed and power to be a top LB.

I am praying we draft a OLB that can blitz in the first two rounds. Woodley in the 2nd would be nice.

We can't depend on on a 32 year old converted DE coming off an ACL tear or or Carp to put pressure on Qb's consistently IMO.

* BTW I love Burnett, love him, but I doubt he can handle a full load week after week. Too small and would wear down late in the season if asked to play full time.

go ahead and get the defense 'fixed' for a three to five year projection....

First, go ahead and get Ken Hamlin inked to a four year deal....

Next, sign Randall Godfrey to a two/three year deal, to give veteran experience to the middle....

Then, give Detroit a fourth round pick in 2008, throw in a sixth rounder this year...and take a renegotiated contract for Shawn Rogers. I would then make him a nose tackle, to rotate about equally with Jason Ferguson....

I would then set about putting the defense on a fast track...

1st round-take CB Aaron Ross or Darvelle Revis

2nd round-take OLB/DE Lamar Woodley, Quentin Moses, or Charles Johnson

3rd round-take Ryan McBean DE

4th round-OLB Tim Shaw or MLB Anthony Waters

5th round-DT Walter Thomas

THEN, with the remaining sixth and seventh round picks, I would shoot for offensive linemen and receivers....

I agree that we should be preparing for Ellis to be pretty much a non-factor next year.

But where do you get the ceiling for Carpenter? When we played Seattle he was our most notable player on defense. Granted, that was one game, but that was a heck of a bright flash, and gave us an idea of what he is capable of.

I don't think his value will be entirely measured in "sacks".

He can't rush the passer period.

He will our Tedy Bruschi, solid but unspectacular.

Just as an aside - ending statements with the word "period" does not automatically make your point of view correct.

Like in this case...

Why on earth would they accept pittance for an All Pro? Suspension problems or not?

It would cost more than a fourth round choice.

That is a dangerous draft.

 Care to elaborate? I think most people, including many NFL scouts, would disagree. Share your wisdom, please.

They've been "fixing" the defense for four years now....the offense needs to be addressed as well and wideout (first three rounds) is an area which must get younger. Having said that I would be happy to end up with either Spencer, Moss or Woodley to backup Ware and a young corner (Revis early) or (J.Wilson/D.Irons later) would be great as well. I really don't see value in drafting yet another defensive end early when we are stacked at the position already.

agree with that. ending a sentence with "period" is one of the most pompously annoying things to me on a forum.

also hate one word/sentence statements without any reasoning and that hit the nail on the head animation...glib crap.

That is a dangerous draft.

Dangerous, why, you want to use those five picks for all defense?
The offensive line is set for this season...as to function in it's starting unit...and there is a workable group of backups in place...

...as to the question of why would someone give up a high priced player for a fourth round selection, maybe you should e-mail Chicago who only gave up a sixth rounder for Archuletta...:lmao2: :lmao: ;) Then again, this is a dealing with the mercenary Detroit franchise....:lmao2: :lmao:

Ferguson and Rogers, myself, I will gladly concede that they are not even journeymen in their NFL life, but I do see three years of very good NFL life if they are combined in the present.....sharing the load.

Guys guys, please allow me to retort.

Period I take back, I mean in my mind from what I have seen, Carp is is no pass rush Beast. You can argue he might be, but if u can't prove it, you are in the same boat as me. Just my opinion.

Period. :)

And Burnett is light and has trouble keeping his weight up. I got this from some BP PC's. I would love for him to line up opposite Ware every down but he simply lacks the frame to do so down after down.

Not sure I agree with this. Believe it or not, Carp's 40 time is in the same range as Ware's, and depending on the source, I've seen it listed as faster. He just doesn't have the sudden acceleration that Ware posesses.

The knock on Carp is that he doesn't always play to his 40 time, and I think that has to do with confidence. Once he diagnoses a play, he has the speed to close on the ball. I think he just needs more experience at the pro level.
