While this is a ho-hummer to most, the long term implications of the Franco Prussian War are still being felt today.
The highpoints:
-The various German states came together to fight France. The result was a united Germany.
-Germany dominated the fighting and took chunks of territory from France. The terms of the treaty that ended the conflict greatly benefitted Germany, including a large payment of money and territory. As a matter of fact, German troops remained in parts of France until the final payment was made.
-France, while a declining power, was furious over the terms of the treaty with the feeling that Germany took advantage
-The German military machine came out of the conflict earning the reputation as being one of the top fighting units on the planet
The bitterness of France over the result of the war and the subsequent terms of the treaty stuck in the France's craw for a long time. And was a driving factor in the harsh terms Germany was given at the end of WWI (which in turn stuck in Germany's craw and fueled WWII).
Germany started to become much more aggressive in world affairs and building up its navy which started driving a wedge between itself and Great Britain.
All in all this relatively local war between Germany and France was the lit fuse that created much of the conflict in the twentieth century and still influences events around the world even today.
