When the game ended I said to my fam, every pick in the draft this year needs to be defense. I'm usually a skeptic when it comes to believing this team. Fool me once but fool me for 21 years shame on me. With that said the loss feels like 91. I really feel we are close to greatness again but yes we must get serious and devote all our resources to defense. We went 13-3 with a incompetent defense. Imagine what we can do with a competent one. Dominance on both sides of the ball needs to return.

  • Anquan Boldin had 67 receptions for 584 yds and 8 TDs for 2.75 million.
  • Brandon LaFell 862 yds 2.5 million
There are guys out there who can help at WR, if we choose to go heavy on defense in the draft. But we could also get DE help for the team for around 13-14 mill a year. There are options to improve this team.

This team is close, if we add 2-3 decent pieces we can get to the Super Bowl. Let's strike now, instead of waiting 2-3 years for rookies to develop. Look at tank, Gregory, Irving. They've been with the team 2-3 years and nada! Hitchens has been with the team 2-3 years and meh.....

My input here is find who can be used as DE from this years DL and draft 3 &1 technic DT in the draft and let the others go. Outside of DTs maybe two CBs. The rest of the draft would be for that gem who will a surprise Defensive player rookie of the year.

What do you think Kenny Britt will get on the market this year? He kind of sank into obscurity over the last few years with the Rams but had a good year this year and he's still relatively young. I think he'd be a massive upgrade at the WR2 spot.

This article is the best I have read that describes the Off Season acquisition of new players to get to the 2017 Playoffs and the Super Bowl.

I thought it was going to say "Have Jerry committed to a secure unit with no communication with the outside world"

They aren't going to draft 3 DE's in the first three rounds unless they're the best available prospects at the positions the Cowboys are looking at...

And the odds are they won't be. May have one DE in the first 3 rounds but certainly not 3 of them.

If I had to guess I wouldn't be surprised if they came away with a DE, CB and WR, and not necessarily in that order.

Following the Cowboys draft board has served them well recently– Why deviate?

In addition they'll probably be able to pick up a middling DE through free agency like Sheard or Addison.

Makes sense, but it'll depend a lot on who is available at that point in the draft.

This is it:
if you control the LOS on both sides of the ball, you win. Pressure on the opposing QB covers many warts. Our DB's know there's a good chance they may need to cover for 5-6 seconds before the QB releases, that's tuff.
It forces you to change your style of play, and more importantly your mentality.
All we really need on the OL is to be free of Free. I think you let Collins and 2 other jags with potential fight it out. I think if there a standout tall wr with great hands, or a really fast guy with average hands we pull the trigger.

It's hard to turn a defense around in one draft. Not saying it cant be done, it's just not likely.

They started a couple years ago with the Jones and Gregory picks (which we all know about the Gregory pick)...

And then last year added Brown, Smith (who could very well contribute greatly in '17) and a DT who contributed 5 sacks as a rookie.

On top of that the Cowboys signed Mayowa, who over the last part of the season really came on.

And we know what Irving is turning into.

So it's not like the cupboard is bare. A couple more DE's are needed along with more secondary help.

A top-10 defense could be achieved in 2017.

I would not go complete defense in this draft.

Address the O line with another player.
Keep bringing in someone to replace just in case.

Agreed. I'd like to see a veteran type WR brought in. I don't have an issue bringing Butler back (I suspect Williams will be pricier) but a guy like Boldin might be a wise fit. Patterson is another name to look at.

Interesting read by Goose.
The issue is though -- Bill Walsh and Tony Dungy knew defensive talent when drafting.

Nothing in Garrett's tenure as head coach suggests he knows defense talent.
Add to the fact that Jerry is ultimate decider in the picks and Jerry's defense selections outside of the Parcells/Jimmy drafts for defensive players has been lousy.

So maybe the saturation draft is the key -- look no further than the great 2000 CB draft of the likes of Goodrich, Larrimore, & Grant. Yikes.
The past is prologue ~ unless the great Will McClay saves the day.

here's an outside the box thought. I know he's technically a 3-4 OLB, and he's not a free agent. Whitney Mercilus. Let's say Houston does want to trade for Romo. I'm not sure what the market would be for Romo, and I'm skeptical if this trade would work straight up. Maybe the Cowboys could sweeten the pot and throw in a 5th round draft pick or something, and maybe have an incentive in the trade that if Romo plays a certain amount of games then the Cowboys would receive Houstons 5th... Idk. I'm just thinking out loud. Not even sure if Mercilus could transition to a 4-3 DE. Thoughts?
