They showed a graphic of Demarcus Ware showing he had 11.5 sacks last year. The most by any Cowboy since 1996..

Did you know that the record for sacks in a season is 22.5 by Michael Strahan. Now, we all know Favre took a dive to give him that record...

What you DIDN'T know is that they started recording sacks for a season in 1978. One year after Harvey Martin recorded 23 in the 1977 season...

How the late great Harvey Martin isn't in the HoF is beyond me...

When I lived in Dallas we used to go to the Stoneleigh P and shoot pool with him. He was a really nice guy and always approachable by Cowboy fans. He used to sit at the corner right by the bathroom. He never shunned a fan and always was gracious and nice. He had his issues, but he was a class guy to Cowboy fans...

The cool thing about living in Dallas during the glory years of Landry was that the players could go out on the town and just be acknowledged rather than being mobbed. Harvey was shy, but accessible. He could never understand his popularity. He once told me that he really appreciated Cowboy fans and their love for the team, but he couldn't understand why he was so popular...

He was a genuinely a good guy and a great player...
so if farve didn't take a "dive" are you saying strahan wouldn't of gotten the sack?

Yep... pretty much so...

He and Favre are noted good friends. If I recall correctly it was late in the fourth quarter of the last game of the season...

Defensive Line:
Carl Eller - HoF - Yes - All Decade Team - Yes
LC Greenwood - Hof - No - All-Decade Team - Yes
Harvey Martin - Hof - No - All-Decade Team - Yes
Jack Youngblood - HoF - Yes - All Decade Team - Yes
Joe Greene - HoF - Yes - All Decade Team - No
Lee Roy Selmon - HoF - Yes - All Decade Team - No

Every player here on the All-Decade team is in the HoF except for Greenwood and Martin...
Two players NOT on the All-Decade Team are in...

Greene is on the 70s all-decade team and Selmon is on the 80s team. That fits with the very reasonable argument that the all-decade team is less exclusive than the HoF (provided a player didn't split his great seasons between decades).

Look, I'm not the only one that sees it that way. I remember the commentators doing the game immediately point it out. The play was suspect. Naked Bootleg to the weak side I think it was.

It was a set-up IMO...

Favre could have thrown the ball away. He did no have to out run Strahan to make any yards or buy time to throw down field, but he had enough rooom to buy time to throw the ball away.

If you look a little closer you will see that he said the 23 came in the YEAR before 1978.
George Andrie is supposed to have had about the same number in 69, I think it was. they were called TRAPS back then.

Yes, I see it now. I knew I was getting confused.

Wehrli is on the 70s all decade team.

Krause is not but he did go to 8 pro bowls vs. Harris' 6. He played about twice as long as well. Krause also is the league's all-time INT leader. Harris suffers from cutting his career short. A better question is why isn't Krause on the all-decade team.

I'm looking for the video. Here's an explanation:
He holds the NFL record for sacks in a single season with 22.5, breaking Mark Gastineau's total of 22 in the 2001 season, though it is tainted with controversy. Before the sack that enabled Strahan to set the record, Green Bay Packers quarterback (and close friend) Brett Favre spoke briefly with him. On the next play, Favre dropped back as if to pass, then suddenly scrambled towards the side that Strahan was rushing from, abruptly diving onto the ground, allowing Strahan to fall on top of him for an easy sack. After the play, during the ensuing celebration, many of the Giants' defensive players patted Favre on the helmet. Many observers accused Favre of deliberately falling to ensure that Strahan would get the record. [1] Mike Freeman, New York Times columnist wrote: "Yes, Mr. Favre, Strahan deserves the record, but please, handing it to him the way you did, as if you were throwing change into a Salvation Army bucket, is the kind of mistake Favre may never live down." Deacon Jones unofficially had 26 sacks in 1967, but the NFL did not keep official sack records until 1982.

Is it a better question or just another good one? Perhaps Harris was just better than Krause while their careers over lapped. Krause had 40 interceptions in the 60s(6 seasons) and 41 interceptions in the 70s(10 seasons). He was very good in the 70s, but even better in the 60s. That is possibly why Harris garnered all decade over him for the 70s. That and having 2 SB rings. Those rings can be a tie breaker.

Yep, I remember that play. It was very late in the game; last game of the season. Favre ran a naked bootleg right at Strahan, then when Strahan got close, Favre literally took a dive while Strahan touched him on the ground and was awarded the sack. Then Favre gets up laughing and pats Strahan on the back. Call it what you want, but to me, it will forever be known as the "phantom sack."

I'm willing to bet that there are some here that can verify the old Stoneleigh P. Harvey was there most every night. He was a very "cool cat" and loved to talk to people....

He is HIGHLY under-rated as an NFL force...

~raises hand~ The Stoneleigh was my group of running buddies regular Fri night watering hole. I'm sure our path's crossed there sometime.

And yup, "The Beautiful Harvey Martin" was/is in my very short list of favorite Cowboys.

This is a guy that outperformed Randy White. I would love to ask Randy about him but I have never really had more than a few quick interfaces with him...

I've shared several Lbs of boiled crawfish with Randy at the now defunct Pontchartrain restaurant on Preston, and now Nate's on Midway, and I'd venture to guess Randy would echo your sentiments wholeheartedly.

Is Harvey Martin even in the Ring of Honor? I dont remember him being there. You'd think his own team would have him in their "HOF".
