Man, we have some serious talent and depth...

Here's my list of people who are guaranteed to make the roster. I wanted to get an idea of how many spots are up for grabs and at what positions, including how many we can keep at each position. By my count, there are 49 guaranteed spots, leaving 4 open. Of those 49 spots, only 7-8 guys are questionable. That is, we will keep someone at that position for sure (like a backup nose tackle) but who will fill the spot is still questionable (Ola, Stanley, Bowen, etc.) I put these questionable people in bold.

Here's the breakdown:

QB--2
Romo
Johnson

RB--4
Jones
Barber
Hoyte
Thompson

WR--6
Glenn
TO
Crayton
Hurd
Stanback
Austin

Oline--9
Adams
Kosier
Gurode
Davis
Columbo
McQ
Maarten
Free
Procter

TE--3
Witten
Fasano
Curtis

Special--3
Grammatica
McBriar
Ladoceur

D-Line--6
Fergie
Canty
Spears
Ratliff
Hatcher
Bowen

LB--8
Ware
Ellis
Spencer
James
Ayodele
Burnett
Carpenter
Glymph

DB--8
Newman
Henry
Glenn
Hamlin
Willams
Watkins
Davis
J. Thomas

You can dispute the people in bold and substitute someone else, I put who I thought was the current front runner in those slots. But those are slots that will definitely be filled. It leaves 4 "flex" slots that could go anywhere (DB, Oline, Dline, LB, RB seem likely places, maybe WR or K)

4 flex slots among all these Bubble players:
Battle
Ball
Brown
Hannah
Polite
D. Anderson
Joe Berge
Montavius Stanley
Ola D.
R. Ayodele
Obomese
Elam
Reeves
Jones
Folk
Jamel (sp?) Richardson
Jamaica Rector
Quincy Butler
Matt moore
Richard Bartel

That's some pretty good potential and talent thats gotta be cut.

Who (4) would you keep if the list above turns out to be correct?
I'd take -- Courtney Brown, Elam, Deon Anderson, and (a shocker) Darilek (who's been getting good reports).

Then, my ps is Ball, Battle, Hannah, Folk, Stanley, Obomese, J. Richardson, Ola Dagundoro, Moore and Bartel

The point is--so few spots, so much talent! If you add the guys in bold to the list of bubble players, then there's 12 spots open and about 28 guys in competition.

Also, there's no way Folk makes the roster. Are you gonna cut an Abram Elam or Courtney Brown to keep him?

Don't think we can keep a third QB either

Nice list.

It gives you a great idea of what the coaches have to go through as they are making their cuts.

think we only keep 2 TE's with Hannah on the practice squad. no way curtis makes the final roster- dude wasn't even a starter in NFL Europe.

Yeah, I started the list b/c I started thinking about Joey Thomas. If he's as good as reported, what do we do with Ball, Brown, Elam, Reeves, Jones. We gotta lot of young potential at the position it seems, so I was trying to figure out how to keep the most

Don't you think we have to keep a 3rd TE? Who is Adam Bergen? Any good? I guess Curtis sucks...

Stanbach will be the 3rd/emergency QB. If he can make the transition to WR, then he certainly adds value to the team.

The DB situation is probably the most interesting. Can't keep more than 10, for sure...

Starting four plus Watkins, Glenn, and Davis seem like a lock

So, three spots...

Fourth corner probably comes down to Joey Thomas vs Reeves

Fifth corner comes down to loser of that battle vs Ball, Butler, Jones. Do we keep experience or potential?

Then, we probably want a flex guy--Jones or Brown, or maybe another safety b/c I think Elam has upside

This is tough to pick. Reeves is probably the most tested corner, but Thomas seems on the up in this camp. do you keep both, forcing you to cut a Ball or Brown? Or do you cut Reeves, save the money, but risk the lack of experience if we lose a corner?

My 10 (I'm changing my mind)--Given 7 and Thomas, Brown (he just made an int!), and Reeves. Elam's shot is to beat out Keith Davis, who is having a good camp.

Hope to get the rest on practice squad, except Jones. He's seems dead in the water to me

If Stanback can't get on the field pretty soon, maybe the coaching staff puts him on IR this year? I'm not sure how much more time he can afford to miss.

It would give him one more year to get used to the transition at WR in any case.

Why is there "no way" Folk makes the roster?

Reports today had him outkicking Gramatica by a wide margin.

Other than that, I think you've got a pretty solid list here. Now that Brown has shown some flashes at FS, I think his versatility makes him a sure keeper...and Ball sees the practice squad.

I'm affraid we're going to see one or two good players excape us through the practice squad this year. The talent we're going to be putting there this year is better than I can recall having in a long time.

I should have said there is no way we keep two kickers. If Folk beats out Grammy, then he'll make it obviously

Gotcha.

I'm kinda hoping Folk takes the job. I'm not very comfortable with Martin, and if Folk wins the job, it'll probably be becasue he did so with some amount of a margin given his rookie status. If that's the case, he's clearly the better kicker. Gramatica's kickoffs leave something to be diesired as well. I'm crossing my fingers.

Adam Bergen - Arizona Cardinals
2005 28 catches 270 9.6
2006 15 catches 111 7.4

Gramatica must be having flashbacks from last year when he got beat out by rookie Stephen Gostkowski.

I am thinking if any of the kids show anything that Jones, Reeves and Aaron Glenn are gone. I think Glenn will be the surprise cut of the 2007 season...

Okay, so you're saying we're only going to keep 4 corners? I think we carried 5 last year. 4 is cutting it close in case something happens.

One gets hurt and there goes your dime package, plus if another gets up you're screwed with the nickel.

No way Tony Curtis makes it over Adam Bergen

That's why keeping guys like Reeves and Brown is benefitial. If they can somehow manage to keep Brown, he could serve as backup safety, and as a fifth cornerback.

This seems to make good sense, but I wonder if it is practical to expect a guy to prepare to be the QB in a pinch while still making progress developing as a receiver. Which does he do in practice during the week?
