Only a matter of time Byron Jones starts at safety

1. I wonder if it’s just a matter of time before Byron Jones becomes a full-time starter at safety. In last week’s loss to the New York Giants he saw action in the base defense in both halves, splitting time with J.J. Wilcox. He had a nice deep-ball breakup from Eli Manning to Rueben Randle after Jason Garrett said he initially lined up incorrectly. Jones’ athleticism allowed him to get back in position to make a play. He has played a lot because of the way the Cowboys’ use their sub packages anyway, but it could be on an every-down basis here soon. The Cowboys drafted him as a cornerback but also said he could play some safety. Now it appears he will be more of a safety who could play some corner in the future. All along the comparison for Jones was New England’s Devin McCourty, who made a similar move. That seems more apt now.

2. Jerry Jones raised many eyebrows when he said on 105.3 The Fan that he would like to sign Greg Hardy to a multi-year deal, but I wonder just how possible it is. In order for Hardy to get top, top, top dollar he needs to head to the open market. The Cowboys can’t put the franchise or transition tag on him per their one-year agreement. While Hardy might love being a Cowboy, it’s about maximizing top dollar. His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, is a master at it. Without other teams involved, it’s easier to keep the price down even if the Cowboys have negotiated against themselves in the past. Hardy is on pace for 18 sacks in 12 games. Maybe some teams will stay away from him because of the off-field issues, but you can be guaranteed he will get a lot of interest from a lot of teams.

3. I wonder if the offensive line found something against the New York Giants. Well, not just the line, but the coaches, too. The Cowboys were able to run

He's already starting at safety in certain packages. He essentially split snaps with Wilcox against the Giants. He's been our most predictable and steady DB this season. That probably has to do with being used situationally, but the game doesn't seem too big or too fast for him and that's huge.

I say CB to replace Carr.

Carr would make an awful safety. His ball in air skills are terrible and he take awful angles in pursuit. His only good asset at this point is when he can get his hands on a receiver. You put him at FS and you've taken away his only strength and emphasized all his weaknesses.

Im not against Jones at corner, but Carr at FS would be a disaster.

Jones needs to be on the field. He is a future Star player, IMO.

I would prefer that he replace Carr at CB but if they want him at Safety that fine also.

He was listed as having played 97% of the snaps in the Pats game.

Agree with you here. Why not put Carr at the Safety spot in place of Wilcox? Since Carr is not good at carrying the receiver across the formation/field. He can at least play deep half or quarters.

Too slow.

No he can't. No speed, field awareness, ball skills, can't tackle in space or in close quarters, no range.

He might be the worst candidate to move to safety.

Based on your evaluation he shouldn't be on the field. :) You need more skills to play CB.

The safety position has had sub-par talent for years. I have no problem with Jones upgrading the position. He is playing better than any of the vets and he could provide the safety upgrade that this team has needed . Every fan that has been screaming about the safety position should be excited. He will only get better with time.

I see him as more of a CB. When I watched him at FS at UConn he didnt really show out to me like at CB. I think his skill set is much more suited to CB, especially what they have been saying we want at CB ( long and athletic )

However he seems like a player that mentally gets it. He has that combination of intelligence and drive so I wouldn't doubt that he could be a top teir FS

Dallas has good building blocks on defense with Jones, Gregory, Hitchens and Hardy. They just need to draft a good nose tackle that can stop the run and rush the passer.

I still prefer Jones at Free Safety and Wilcox at SS.

Even when Patmon was playing slot CB and something happened in a game that caused both Safeties to miss some snaps, they used Heath and Jones with White on the bench.

Now White is the slot CB so he is even less likely to see time at Safety.

I did think back at the beginning of the season that White would play some Safety but that seems unlikely now.

I've said all along watch where we draft next year. Which ever position we draft the highest won't be the position Jones will play.

I believe in having your best players on the field at all times or as much as possible and if i'm putting my 5 best DB's out there......Carr is out there. Claiborne and Corey White are as well. Byron Jones and Wilcox would be too. Or Church. But not both Wilcox and Church. NOt at the same time.
