Before I start let me say I think we need to be a run first team this year and try to run 35-40 times a game. But...

SD knows what we want to do. BP has made no secret of it. So in my mind I'm picturing our first drive, starting at say our own 25, and I see JJ off tackle left, JJ off tackle right and staring at 3rd and 7. Then SD sends the house, sacks Bledsoe and we punt from our own 18. SD gets the ball at the 50, and in 5 plays it's 7-0 and their fans are rocking. If we get further behind we could abandon the run too soon and we end up getting blown out. Not saying this is going to happen but it worries me.

So....I'd like to see us come out in the 1st drive with the no huddle, 3 wides and throwing the ball. Get the ball over mid field and go deep. Give those ladies in powder blue something to think about besides smash mouth. If we can punch it in the end zone first it will go a long way towards keeping the crowd out of it, putting them on their heels some and opening up the run for the rest of the game. NE puts a huge premium on having a very aggressive 1st drive game plan to set the tone and get a lead. I think it's worked pretty well for them. That 1st drive doesn't HAVE to result in a score but I do think it needs to send a message and not give them a short field. On the road we need to score 1st. Just my 2 cents.

i agree that i would like to see more 3 wideout sets. but JJ getting 2 runs for 3 yards doesnt sound very realistic O.O

Sure it does. You can't expect even the best back to get 3+ yards on every carry. Those 3.5 - 4.0 YPC are averaged when you include the 20 and 30 yard runs too.

San Diego has a pretty stingy run defense.

I will admit I would love to see us start off in a 3 WR set just to catch them off gaurd.

As always I hope the only thing we lose is the coin toss. I love being on defense to start a game. Logic behind that is heading into the second half if you’re leading you have a chance to extend your lead and if you’re trailing you have a chance to cut the lead. Also I think offense tends to start off a bit slower than defense so you get a chance to have decent field position to start your 1st drive of the game.

I don't mind going on D first because I expect Marty will come out conservative, which is his nature. Especially if Cortez can get a touch back, which is very possible, they won't want to make a mistake early deep in their zone. But either way when we get the ball for the first time I'd like to see us come out chucking and get on the board first.

I'd like to see us enforce our will upon them. Yes, they know we want to run it. Let's run it down their throats. We need to be more physical than them for all 60 minutes. I hope we don't change our game plan just because our opponent is trying to stop the run. For goodness sakes, we have 3 pro bowl linemen to block for our RBs.

I would be fine with a 3 and out if we ran the ball all three times. Just so long as we don't turn the ball over!

I would like to see us start on D first since it is an away game, the first game of the season and anxiety is going to be high. Good chance for an early offensive breakdown and back us into a hole. Would like to see a bit of a field position battle and then have Bill open it up towards the end of the first quarter or early second quarter after testing their D a little to see how their game planning us.

It happens a ton on opening drives every week, especially an opening game at home. SD knows they have a good squad, they're at home, both the players and crowd will be JACKED. I'd just love to turn that around and give them an apple when they're hunting for an orange. 1st down at the 25, play action, skinny post to Crayton for 20. Then no huddle, quick out to Key for 7. 2nd and 3, no huddle shotgun fly pattern to Glenn for...6!!

They do a lot of run blitzing. Parcells said there is a way to make teams pay for doing that but it takes time to learn. Let's hope he has taught them.

This is my perspective of the start of the game.. First of all we wont win the Coin toss and Chargers will get the ball first.. we will stop then around the 28 yard line... and there first play will be a pass which will get about 6 yards then thats when were gonna smack down LT on the next 2 plays that they will run on.. Newman will return the punt about 15 yards and will Drive down and score Im predicting a Touchdown but probably a Field goal.. and there you have it gentleman and ladies.. our first series of offense and Defense.. :skins: :skins: :skins:

I don't know if they can do it but I agree. Remember the 90s when other teams knew what play the Cowboys would run but could not stop it.

I disagree, we're so focus on stoping LT that't i wouldn't be stock if Marty come out and called a first play flea flicker on us.

I think we will have the advantage early on, simply because we have some pretty good kickers in Cortez and McBriar. I really like Cortez on kickoffs especially, because he can reach the endzone pretty easily. Also, McBriar is an excellent punter and consistently places the ball inside the 20 as we have seen. So, I doubt the Chargers will be starting at the 50 at any point in the game unless there is a turnover. The play-action will definitely fool our LB's in this game with Tomlinson in the backfield. So, Keith Davis will be the target on pass defense and he better not get caught on the play-fake. Brees is a mobile QB and and make something happen if chased outside, but if we don't get consistent pressure on Brees he will eat us up. Look for some screen passes to Tomlinson as well. We didn't cover the screen well in preseason and you can bet the Chargers know about it. I think we will win the game, because our O-Line and D-Line are simply better overall. Barring turnovers, you win the game in the trenches.

From their own 20? Maybe you wouldn't be shocked but I would.
