Just wondering what some of you guys thought about Martin from UNC. Was hopeful he might be a third rd target but maybe has climbed into the 2nd. Good measurables, production, team captain, great size. I guess he would project to the strong side for us.

Here are the positives as I see them...
-Terrific athlete. Ranked #2 out of 43 defensive linemen when it came to the overall physical testing at the combine per Ourlads.
-Very productive over his 3 years of starting. Had 44 TFL over that time period.
-Great at stuffing the run.

The negatives...
-He had 11.5 sacks last year but doesn't have "quick twitch" of a weakside DE.
-Someone else said that Martin actually rushes the passer better from the inside.

I think the kid is a very good prospect. Ourlads has him possibly being drafted in the 1st round.

If the Cowboys needed an almost sure thing strong-side DE, he'd be my choice. But being that they need a weak-side DE more, along with more help inside... I wouldn't think he's being looked at as the first option for Dallas via a trade down.

I agree. I think he would definitely be on the strong side for us. I think he's gonna be a good one. I'm sure we're licking our chops for WDE and DT.

He'd be a nice rotation piece if he could be had a little later.

I think Kareem Martin has the game and size/speed to play either side. At 6'6 270 running a 4.7 that's better than most. He has a quick first step, good closing speed and great length. He covers quite a bit of ground quickly. His strength is in his length of stride and 35' arms. He has all the tools to become a pass rushing/run stuffing WDE. The second half of last year Kareem got hot and really improved as a pass rusher. He needs good coaching and from what I've heard Marinell is pretty good.

He's a little more athletic than JPP with a similar build and think he would be a solid Rd 2 pick for us.

I like Martin in Round 2. You're right, we need a WDE more, but if that player isn't there . . . . we could still use a young, high quality SDE. And Round 2 would be decent value for a solid player. He would be a good piece to start rebuilding the defense. It's a job that will take a couple years in any case.

Also a big fan of Martin. Not to be taken too literally but.....he reminds me a little of Peppers. Not kidding myself saying he will end up being nearly as good, but I think he has a very similar build and skill set, when he chooses to use it. Which he definitely did for about 3/4 of his senior year.

I think that is the thing you worry about. Did he just have a good last year to get paid or did things just click and he matured into his position

I agree, I think he can play both, he won't be a sack master but I can see him being like a Michael Bennett type.

That's a good post, Mike...but the Cowboys need everything along the DL.

I think the Cowboys are interested in Ealy and Martin for similar reasons, they could be high level SDE's and also play some 3 technique on passing downs.

Yeah and they are valid questions. With the skill set and size that he has he probably should have been more of a stand out in the ACC than he was. Guess that's what the coaches ans scouts get paid for though....

Martin and Crichton are my two favorite for the strong side. I would love to have either.

I want to trade 16 and 47 for 26, 35, and 71 and walk away with the following

26 Shazier
35 Ealy
71 Martin
77 Sutton

I would then try and trade next year 2nd and this year 5th for a early 3rd and get Billy Turner

Then in the 4th get a WR Street/Norwood/Huff

What's it going to be then, eh?

As good as Kony Ealy and none of this idiocy about taking him in the first round.

Martin won't last to 71. He could be gone by the time the Cowboys pick at #47.

I don't get the Ealy love either.

Ealy has some physical tools but his stat line suggests he doesn't play to his physical skills. I certainly wouldn't like him as a weak-side defensive end.
