Personally, I think the theory that you need a change of pace "thumper" type of back instead of another DeMarco Murry is flawed. I think a two back rotation should have two similar backs so that the game plan doesn't have to change that much from play to play or series to series.

I think you can have a "lightening" type of back who is a lot smaller and great at catching passes out of the backfield on third down who would never stand up to the pounding that an every down back would face. But that's about it.

If you get a thumper as your change of pace back to Murray and Murray goes down you have to revamp the theory of your offense to fit the thumper type of back for the games Murray is out. We should be dictating what we want to defenses, and not vice versa. :)

i don't think being a thumper means you can't run our offense with him at all. with a ZBS you want a guy who can read the blocks and make one cut and go. that does'nt mean he can't be a thumer at all. lots of bigger backs do well in the zbs. the ideal of a bigger back allows you to run for that 3rd and 2 instead of passing for it. the biggest thing is having guys on the oline who can actually open a hole every once in awhile

Would you rather have another DeMarco Murray or a Marion Barber?

A good running back is effective no matter if you want to call him a thumper or a change of pace running back. I want a runner that gets positive yardage no matter how he does it.

I think of a change of pace back as being a scat back but that's not always the case. I would draft someone who could replace your starter. If you end up with two starters you play them both. We have a scat back already.

I'm not opposed to drafting backs who have different skill sets yet both capable of starting. I think a "change of pace back" gives defenses more to think about and prepare for.

Kenjon Barber is one of my pet cats...I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to see this guy wearing the star in the 4th or 5th round...potential home run every time he touches the ball...
