Greg Ellis has missed the last 6 games. Here's how many times opponents have converted 50% or more of their 3rd downs in a game:

with Ellis
2 out of 9 games

without Ellis
6 out of 6 games

The worst 3rd down defense in the league gives up an average of 46.6%. We haven't held the opponent under 50% since Arizona, the game Ellis was injured in.

Over the first 9 weeks of the season, Dallas was among the top 10 third down defenses. In the last 6 weeks, the Cowboys have dropped into the bottom 10.

Ah c'mon, haven't you heard? Ellis' play this season was overrated.

We miss Ellis tremendously. Also just to throw it out there, we miss Dat, he would make sure the LBs knew what the hell they were doing.

I didnt miss Ellis in pass coverage but he was the man when it came to a pass rush.

A lot of people under-estimated what he did for our defense and now its kicking us in the butt.

On the subject of LB James is number 1 on my you know what list.

He gets his extension and hasnt done anything all year.

I miss the speed of our old LBs (IE coakley and dat).

It would be nice if our front3 could bring the pressure more often than this.
Lots of potentials but no production. :banghead:

I dont give BP and Zimmer on the Ellis stat. Ellis was a pleasant surprise to hold onthe starting spot and wasnt clearly in their plans to be an everytdown player.

Exactly our defense is a fancy house built on a shakey foundation.

You don't stop them on 3rd, you don't get off the field. You don't get off the field, they just drive for 8+ minutes, score, wear you out, then their fresh defense holds you and you're on the field again.

These all out "blitzes" on 3rd downs have to stop. They get no penetration. Might as well sit 8 back and cover since sending 7 does nothing.

Should the loss of one player in supposedly one of the deepest areas of our team cause such a drop off in performance? What does that say about our talent and scheme?

I think you are absolutely right.

md2005 is too:

Here's a frightening thought ... things could be even worse.

Remember the draft of a couple of years ago? Parcells was so sold on the importance of Spears to the 3-4 that Parcells wanted to draft Spears instead of Ware with the first of those two 1st round draft picks.

Jerry Jones decided to roll the dice. He picked Ware and gambled that Spears would still be available a little later. Thanks, Jerry. Things would be worse now if not for your decision.....

Ellis is a good, not great player. Plus he's getting older anyway. I'm not raggin him, but I'm sick of him being used as an excuse while the Eagles kick our *** w/out Kearse and Mcnabb. Injuries happen and this is generally a healthy team. No excuses for the performances on a national stage and at home vs NO and PHI.

As JJ said...."its an inditment of the entire organization, top down." Amen.

Too many people think just because Ellis never got a bunch of sacks that he was nothing special.

It is time people realize there is more to defense than sacks and ints.

I don't know if we are deep at OLB. It seems to me all the LBs we have are MLB outside of Ware. That's the biggest problem we have with this team right now. And the young kid from Grambling(Thornton or whatever it is) isn't ready right now.

To run the 3-4 well, you've got to have standout LBs. The Cowboys have only one obvious standout LB (D. Ware).

The Cowboys just don't have enough standout LBs to play the 3-4 well.

IMO, it is wishful thinking to believe that Ellis would have been the difference maker had he only stayed healthy. He was going o.k. before his injury. Pretty good at some things. Not so great at others. But a standout? Nah.
