Actually I still don't quite understand. There will still be dead money from his bonus applied against the 2015 cap, will there not? I get that this season we save a little overall from releasing him, but this will still haunt us next season (unless we are well under the cap then).

Orton was a part of the Cowboys’ big free agent haul last off-season. Orton will be entering the second year of a three-year, $10.5 million contract that included a $5 million signing bonus.

He was basically calling their bluff. He knew they would file a grievance over the bonus money if he didn't offer to show up.

Yes, he probably said that he was not going to retire just to keep from having to pay back the money.

I doubt if he wants to play for another team because he is unlikely to get the 3.25M that he would have received for playing for the Cowboys.

The supposition in this thread is irritating. Orton was a pretty good backup quarterback who has been replaced with another pretty good backup quarterback. Both guys aren't good enough to be starters. The guy we have now is making far less money. Yes, there's dead money for cutting Orton but it's really negligible in the grand scheme of things. Those are the facts and nothing else really matters. Bring on training camp!

I think Red had say in this. If they let Orton trot in after missing all the OTAs and such it would undo most if not all that Garrett has been preaching. Orton may have gotten what he wanted but I think the FO/Garrett got send a message also.

What the hell are you talking about? That $ is prorated. We got him for 2 years yet spread some of his cap hit over 3. That is in no way a "loss."
