Orton didn't want to retire?

The way I see it there was no other choice. It's amazing how some fans can even over analyze something like this and attempt to satisfy their intense desire to place blame on someone when there is really no blame to be given.

Alright, enough of the media claiming Orton is the greatest thing happening to the world since a spinning jenny met a cotton field. And Orton has the corner on Egyptian, long thread, cotton.

It was obvious to many. He still wanted to collect a game check doing the least amount of work possible just not here. I only see 2 reasons, the first being the most reasonable.

1. Sees Romo as a huge liability health wise and fears he may have to play quite a bit if he goes down
2. He hates Jerry

Only reason I mentioned #2 because he isn't the first player who wanted out of here. Ratliff did this same thing.

But I do believe he has no desire to want to play as a starter but still wants money to do much of nothing. He feels that is too risky here. That he could possibly have to play the rest of the season like Kitna did in 2010.

One more, he saw a money route out of Dallas to make more money. He would be the top commodity on the market for a franchise having an injury at it's starting quarterback...and then even more money and a starting gig, which was what he wanted when he first came to Dallas.

My understanding is that a player doesn't get paid twice. If we owe him 3 mil and he signs a contract for 10 mil, his new team only pays 7m, while we pay the 3m we owe.

I could, of course, be wrong - but that's what I've always heard about these things.

Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones says Orton was going to report to training camp. Apparently the Cowboys didn't want him there, and wanted him to retire, so they cut him

Apparently, he wanted to skip all the offseason work and just come to camp and Dallas said thanks but no thanks.

How did you get this from that statement.

Well If that's the case then I guess Jerry didn't have a choice. I don't want anyone on the team that doesn't want to be here. It sucks though.

I'm asking this seriously, am I missing something because It looks to me that JJ wanted to go with Weeden at a lower salary and wanted Orton to retire (best case) or cut him. If this was the case then the Cowboys would want him there in the off season because of injury concerns. My question is, how is this Orton's fault?

Confusing situation.

Luckily we are talking about Kyle Orton here. Not like his presence/talent will be missed here.

Let him report and then send him home for being a detriment to the team..

If he reported and wasn't blasting the team in the media or doing something else, I doubt that they could have sent him home as a detriment....I don't think missing voluntary workouts would be sufficient cause. TO and Keyshawn both were vocally bashing the team and players.

When they send him home for conduct detrimental...it is my understanding that that they still have to pay him his salary so there is no financial gain to the team...I think they can fine him for a max of 4 games.

There has been ongoing discussion between the team and Orton so I think it finally just came to the point where the team decided it was going to be a distraction, they have a legitimate replacement in Weeden and they are going to save cap space. In addition, it means they actually are done paying Orton any real $$$...it's all cap space.

He didn't put in the effort to be here. Are you guys seriously upset about this?

I am one of Orton's biggest fans, I so prefer him over Weeden. I think in the game of poker being played, Jerry blinked and he won. My answer to this is still no. I'd rather have the cap room to use to re-sign Bryant and Smith. I doubt Orton would take the Clint Longley approach to getting his walking papers, but I don't want a player who wants to play for a scrub team instead of the Cowboys. Good riddance to him.

Orton LOST 3.25m when Dallas released him. All he had to do was show up for a few OTAs and carry the clipboard all year.

Dallas saved 3.25m in real money and in cap space. They got a 1st round draft pick for free to backup Romo.

Anyone who thinks that this is a case of bad management is smoking the good-good.

The idea of going after the remaining 1.7m of his pro-rated 5m signing bonus doesn't understand how Dallas writes contracts. Orton allowed 2 voidable years to be added to help the team. He restructured his 2013 salary to help the team. The original 5m bonus was allocated to his salaries for 2013 and 2014, he earned that money already.

The guy didn't want to play here anymore and the team didn't need him. To pay him 3.25m as a punishment seems backwards to me. If he wants to go somewhere else, WHO CARES????
Your out of your mind if you think this is anything less then poor management.

I don't care that he is gone, that isn't my issue. I don't care about the money. This shows how poorly Jerry runs this franchise and how clueless he is in running it. Your blind if you can't see that this is a very bad trend Jerry started with disgruntled players.

If true, I stand corrected.

People on this board often confuse dead money with actual pay outs. Dead money simply reflects a cap charge for a player no longer on the team. Any player who got a bonus and is cut before the end of their deal generates dead money - this is $ we would have spend anyway and it is often offset by not having to pay their salary.
