I think we eden is here for two reasons.

They liked him coming out in college so they signed him cheap to see what he has.

And

With Tony coming off another surgery they want another arm in camp to help out and limit his snaps.

I think this rumor is nothing more than what was said before even though it was already squashed and people are still running with it because it is just more silly stuff to talk about among over reactionary worry wart cowboy fans.

But that is just my opinion.

It's also telling that they're attending pro days for some of the top QBs expected to go in the early rounds. They don't usually do that.

As Parcells used to say about older players, "Once you think about retiring, you're already retired."

I think it had more to do with Romo getting injured at the age of 34 years old and realizing we need 3 QB's this year because if Romo goes out early, then you're relying on Orton with no backup.

YR

True, but that was the case last year, too. And the year before, etc.

You mean they have not looked at QBs in the draft since Jason was here until now. Like they never had interest in weeden, Dalton or Russell and a those are just off the top of my head.

I call bs.

This is a QB who had success in the nfl.
Even though we lost that last game. He looked like he wanted to win and wasn't just watching the clock.

I hope Orton comes back because I definitely think he's gonna have to play this season. I loved the way he was drawing the Eagles offside with his hard count. I haven't heard a hard count like that in Dallas since Aikman or maybe Bledsoe. Tony needs to implement that more in his game.

If the backup is "gonna have to play", then they might want to just tank the season, get a top 10 or top 5 pick and draft a QB. The majority of top QBs over the years have been top 10 picks. The ones that aren't get a lot of press (i.e. Brady was a 6th), but the majority are 1st round picks and usually in the top 10.

He played well when we needed him last year, Don't love his cap hit but we can't rely on a nobody at back up with Romo hurting

He' s sort of a Steve Berlline type of QB..Aikman's old backup.

Serviceable for several games if needed.

Which he may.

Your theory would be the correct one.

I like the fact that we have Orton, as a vet he can be ready at a moment’s notice and not get over whelmed by what the defense is showing him. I felt he did a pretty good job in the Philly game things did not work out but he gave us a real chance.

I don't think it was a dumb signing at all. I thought the offense looked better with him against Philadelphia than it had been looking under Romo. Of course, I would expect that to tail off if Orton became the full fledged starter. But, that's what you want out of your backup. You don't want him to play if you can prevent it. But, you want a guy that can step right in and keep the offense moving at a pretty good clip, you should be happy with that. IMO, Kyle Orton was the least of our problems the past 2 years.

YR

That second sentence simply isn't true at all, with Tony we win that game and Orton held the offense down.

Kyle Orton retired from the NFL before he ever wore a Cowboys jersey. Looking back, signing him was dumb. He never should have been signed in the first place.

Orton could have started in the NFL last year, but instead, he chose to come to Dallas, where he KNEW he wouldn't start and the money would be easy. He knew there wasn't a chance of beating out Romo. He played one game, and I'd bet good money that was one more than he bargained for.

Here we are now, and there's a strong possibility that Orton could see significant playing time next year. Tony Romo is coming off two back surgeries, and much uncertainty surrounds his future. That means extra care must be taken to protect him, hurt or not. The backup QB is an important figure.

Now, Orton is now seriously mulling retirement. Despite being healthy and relatively young with a big check coming, he isn't sure about the upcoming season.

Most concerning, to me, is that his decision seems to be based on if he'll have to play or not. If he knew he could hold a clipboard and watch, I'd bet good money he'd be on board. If he has to play half the season, I think he wants out pronto.

For that reason, I hope he does the right thing and leaves.

Clipboard in one hand and his bank deposit slip in the other hand.

Orton is really looking at his bank account , while holding clipboard and saying "wow" I'm making this much money for doing this"- "America really is the land of opportunity".

When you have the pictures he has floating around the internet, you're not a serious person and someone who takes life seriously. OP has a point.
