Robert Duvall, the Oscar-winning actor best known for “The Godfather,“ “Apocalypse Now” and many other tough-guy roles over an acclaimed screen career that spanned six decades, has died. He was 95.

Duvall died “peacefully” at his home in Middleburg, Virginia on Sunday, according to a statement sent by his public relations agency on behalf of his wife, Luciana.

Duvall memorably played the Corleone family consigliere, or key adviser, in Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather,” earning his first of his seven Academy Award nominations for the 1972 film before reprising the role two years later in “The Godfather Part II.” Duvall noticeably skipped a long-delayed second sequel, “The Godfather Part III,” due to a pay dispute...Read more

Another legend. Gone. Rest in peace, Mr. Duvall.

I always like the fact he kept doing niche movies not destined
for blockbuster status to keep his skills honed to a sharp edge.

A true great.

RIP. A very good actor. I like pretty much anything he did. He was great as Tom Hagen, but he was so much more than that part.

It is interesting, the first role I remember him from is True Grit. Before the Godfather. I did not realize he was this old; he did the godfather when he was over 40. I never saw any of his work when he was real young. He has always been an older actor to me

So many roles it’s hard to pick…..

Here are some lesser known and underrated.

  • Deep Impact, as the lone veteran astronaut who ends up taking charge and gives his life
  • Falling Down, as the grizzled caring cop who tries to talk down Michael Douglas’s character and work with his ex-wife
  • The Natural, as the sportswriter who covers Robert Redford’s character comeback
  • And my personal favorite, Colors. LA gangbangers and cops before those genres really hit it big, the veteran cop partner who tries to mentor hotheads Sean Penn
And how could they not get him to return for Godfather III yet his voice is in all the Godfather video games??? Not the same with George Hamilton in his role.

And last but not least, his role as Gus in Lonesome Dove. If you read the books, you would know how hard it was going to be to find an actor who could capture the role’s charisma. Did so well that I think he typecast himself as a cowboy later in life.
