The Giants appear to have benched RE Osi Umenyiora in favor of Mathias Kiwanuka, and DT Fred Robbins for Chris Canty.

The big news here is Umenyiora; Canty probably would've overtaken Robbins much earlier in the year had he not torn his calf in the preseason. Umenyiora, who missed all of 2008 due to a knee operation, has just 19 tackles and four sacks through 11 starts for a Giants defense that's been a massive disappointment. Kiwanuka is the more explosive option at weak-side end at this point.

LOL! I'm more concerned about Osi going out. I'd rather have Umenyoura playing than Kiwi... although I'm sure he would have played even if Osi were starting.

I think it was on NFL Total Access where they mentioned Osi getting benched because MK is appearantly better against the run, and that Osi is just plain terrible against the run.

They reported on Sirius NFL Radio that Robbins and Osi were running with the 2nd team in practice.

Coughlin trying to push buttons. Desperation.

This team is just looking for a reason to roll over and die (or hit the links). Getting an early lead on Sunday might take all the fight out of them.

Osi Umenyiora will play he may not start in large part because of the problems he has had vs the run but NY will rotate him in passing situations.

pfft. Under Bill Sheridan, Canty might even play a little CB that game as well...

Sad that Osi won't be in for the abusing from our run game. MK is a little better at stopping the run.

Rocky Bernard couldn't even get work in the goalline D this week.

Ahmad Bradshaw practiced which means he might be available

C.C. Brown will be starting at safety again(great news cause he's terrible)

It should be a little interesting to see how Canty plays on Sunday. For the record I hope he fails miserably.

I don't know if they are really benched or just 'not starting' similar to how Patrick Crayton was 'benched'

They are not going to bench him they will pull him as the starter but we will see plenty of Osi in the game. NFL Network was talking about this and at least what they are hearing from the Giants is they feel by rotating him in on passing situation he will be much fresher when it comes time to bring the heat.

I don't see this as a desperation move at all. Osi is a great pass rusher but is terrible against the run. Mathias is much better at stopping the run and can get to the passer as well. I think in obvious passing downs Osi will be in the game. If this move was done much earlier, their run defense wouldn't have been as terrible as it has been.

At least that is what the Giants are hoping for. Problem is if Dallas is able to break some runs despite this move it will only increase the doubts for the Giants.
