Noticed several of you want Colombo to replace Tucker or Pettiti because of you think he has to be better then they are. From the articles when we signed him in early Nov, it seemed to be that he was one of Parcells projects which didn't cost us much but could pay big dividends in the future--not this year.
Colombo only costs Cowboys about $250,000 this year; cheap for former first 2002 round OT pick; moved from LT to RT with Bears who already had LT pro bowler. NFL draft history profile stated he essentially had no weaknesses. Started first 6 games at RT for Bears; seriously injuried knee (including nerve damage) in 7th game & placed on IR; on IR all of 03 & PUP in 04. Played last 2 games in 04 for Bears but didn't play that well; did block 2 FGs. Cut in 05 TC for cap salary reasons. Cowboys signed him to 2 year deal letting him know we would take longer view of his comeback; not necessarily using him much this year. About 2 weeks ago in Dallas sports journalist interview Colombo said knee felt much better since our training had been working on developing fluidity in knee, not just strength. Not surprised Parcells not yet excited about Colombo; he's essentially still a rookie who hasn't played much since 02; he's rusty & more work needed on knee for successful comeback attempt. Parcells will closely monitor Colombo's work with trainer and participation in offseason weight conditioning program but doubt kid comes back since he already over 3 years removed from injury.
