Just noticed at http://www.the506.com/nflmaps/2007-14-FOX.html that Pat Summerall will be announcing the game this week. Unfortunately it will be the St. Louis @ Cincinnati game and not ours.

Sigh

I'm sorry guys. I love Madden, I love watching the NFC coverage by CBS and Fox over the years. But the one thing that I hated was listening to Pat Summerall make mistake after mistake while calling a game.

For some reason, ppl get nostalgic over Pat. Fact of the matter is, we are really just nostalgic for our Super Bowl days and it just so happened that Summerall called a lot of those games. I don't miss Pat for a second.

Pat did start to lose it there near the end of his career and I really don't want to listen to him now. But back in the day he was the best. Back when he was with Brookshire (who was an idiot) Pat made the broadcast.

So you're saying he'd be perfect for the NFLN?

NFLN has the great Chris Collinsworth(less) in the booth...how can you beat that? You can't miss any more calls than he does or be wrong in any more opinions than he is.

The game's passed him by. I loved him hearing him call games when I was growing up though.

Him calling Thanksgiving games = classic.

Pat Summerall IS the voice of the NFL. There is noone else even close.

I still play Madden 2002 sometimes just to hear him call a game... true story.

I do miss the days of Anus Williams intercepting a Toy Aikman pass...

Sure he was bad towards the end, but there was a time there where he and Madden calling a game together couldn't be beat.

I understand what you're saying, but you mis-diagnosed me. I loved Summerall in the booth. He was one of my favorites.

Yeah Madden and Summerall were the best. :D Yal think Madden left Fox because they forced 'em to split up?

I didn't mind the mistakes at all for Pat. It was all about the personality in that case. I also don't need anyone telling me what is happening in the game. I just enjoyed hearing the two talk.

The best was right at the beginning of the game when he would go through our offensive starters. "Tuinei, Newton, Stepnoski..."

I would just get this rush of adrenaline. I definitely miss the summerall/madden combo. Good days.

Summerall makes Bryant Gumbel look like a genius.

Good riddance!

that's like saying Tom Landry made Dave Campo look like a genius...
people's skills fade in their old age, but that doesn't tarnish their greatness.

Pat Summerall was the best ever. If you want to disagree, that is fine, but at least show some respect for the history of the game.

Not even close. I listened to Summerall for a long time. Even in his "prime". The guy said things that didn't happen, then would miss things that did happen. He simply added nothing to my enjoyment of the game.

Guys like Dick Enberg and Greg Gumble (and even Al Michaels in his prime) make the game more enjoyable by calling the action as it should be. Michaels in his prime was probably the best, even with his 49ers bias.

Perfect example of what I'm talking about. You miss the great Cowboys, not Summerall.
