since someone who will remain nameless made a point to state how Bobby Carpenter is a bad pick because he isnt starting TODAY, I thought I'd research some other teams top picks and see what they were doing...I didnt count Denver, Arizona or Tenn since their top picks were QB's

look at all these "bad" picks, since they must be "bad" if they arnt starting right? 19 of 29 top picks are not starters

Philly- Bunkley 2nd
Wash- McIntosh 2nd
NYG- Kiwanuka 2nd
Tampa- Joseph 1st
Atlanta- J Williams 2nd
New Orleans- Bush 2nd
Carolina- D Williams 2nd
SF- V Davis 2nd, Lawson 1st
Seattle- Jennings 2nd
St Louis- T Hill 2nd
Chicago- Manning 2nd
GB- Hawk 1st
Minnesota- Greenway, injured but coaches said he would not have been a starter
Detroit- Sims 2nd
Miami- J Allen, 2nd
New England- Maroney, listed 3rd team
Buffalo- Whitner 1st & McCargo 2nd
NYJ- Ferguson & Mangold, both 1st
Cinci- Joseph 2nd

Pitt- Holmes 2nd
Houston- Williams 1st

Take it a step further...the teams that have their first rounders starting:

OAK
TEXANS
Whiners
GB
JETS - Were hurting big time on oline...big time needs for them.

The point - These teams will not be in the hunt and need to get their youth experience.

Ba-zactly. Good teams don't need draft picks to be major contributors. We are a good team.

I wouldn't have minded Cromartie or Joseph or even Mangold as our first round pick.

We will see in a few years, too early to tell right now.

But a secondary with Newman, Henry, Cromartie, Watkins and Williams sounds really nice right about now being that Carp will be sitting the bench most of the year.

That's the most expensive secondary ever.

He is slated to start in our nickel packages. I'm not sure what that percentage is, but I would almost guarantee it's around 40. Him and Burnett were our nickel LBs, last I heard. Hardly sitting the bench most of the year.

Carpenter will start on our nickel defense. So unless Cromartie replaces either Henry or Watkins in our base package he would have started just as much as Bobby will this year.

Some of those teams had 2 first rd picks (49ers, Bills, etc)

Three of the teams listed did.

Which makes 28 top picks. It doesn't matter, I was just a little confused.

We drafted Carp because he was supposed to help this year. He might but, if he is playing less than 50 percent of the time I would rather had someone with more upside.

Cromartie, Lawson ect

I'd rather have this lineup on nickel downs then what we have at this time.

LDE Ellis
DT Spears
DT Ratliff
RDE Canty

LB's Ware and Burnett

NCB Cromartie

Just my opinion.

You think Cormartie would see the field over Glenn? yeah, he's a specimen, but so is Jammer, and even now he wouldn't beat out Glenn as our third CB. Ware and Ellis are our Nickel ends, I don't think Canty makes much sense there. Carpenter and Burnett are pretty strong in pass coverage. Upside is nice, but it misses just as often as it hits. I think Carp was the most solid pick to make, and that's what the defense needs - a Teddy Bruschi to Ware and Ellis's Willi McGinest. :)

He would have at some point. Glenn is the oldest player on our D and isn't getting any younger or better. We could have used the upgrade. He has a year or 2 left in the tank max.

He is also 6'2 faster and stronger. Playing nickle back would have eased his transition into the NFL as well. More upside than Carp.

Like to Add Carpenter was a safer pick and should be good for many years as long as he stays healthy.

Houston only had one first round pick.
Kiwi was also a first round pick.
And why are second rounders being used as comparison ?

No, sorry... if there are 32 spots in the first round and 3 QB's were drafted in the first that makes 29 others spots, not 28... Doesn't matter that some teams had two picks. The reason there are more than 29 listed is he listed some teams 2nd round picks that did not have a 1st rounder (ie Skins and McIntosh)

If "at some point" means, not immediately, we'd have the same bellyaching as we do now with Carp, lol.

The only old players we have are Glenn, Ellis and Ferguson. Carp is Ellis' replacement, and was probably scheduled for Ellis' spot originally. The other option there was Singleton.

Cromartie was a boom or bust pick. I'm not sure I wanted a pick who played all of what, 1 game last year? That was a reach by the Chargers, and it would have been worse for us, considering how good our corner situation was.

I'd rather have Carp in there than Ware because he has better pass coverage skills. With the pass rushing abilities that line has, we wouldn't need out linebackers to provide pressure as much as in the 3-4. Carpenter provides pretty good coverage and good (just not as good as Ware) blitzing ability.
