Scary Good. Right out of the chute too. Bigtime rotation on the d line, nice selection of linebackers, all big too, and a hard hitting secondary. I see us as being one of those defenses nobody wants to play. One where you just know your gonna take a physical pounding no matter what. Should be alot like the Ravens D the year the won the superbowl. I'd look for Roy playing up alot of the time and wreaking major havoc. Thinking we cause quite a few turnovers this year...........

Ravens played 4-3 though I believe so its hard to compare the same way. I think your defense can be as good as the Steelers though.

i dunno, a lot of our defense is inexperienced and is counting on rookies and 2nd year players, and honestly do we really have a FS?

Our defense was good last year and is as good or better at every position except nosetackle this year. I'd be surprused if we're NOT top 5.

I hope you are correct.....I will wait until the preseason to give my opinion on them....just too many parts are new....but the potential is there.

I'm still a bit concerned about the LB play, FS, and Nose Guard. But far less than I was before the draft.

If Ware goes down, that will put a major dent in the LB play, but I do think people are underestimating Kalen Thornton. I thought the kid could really play.

But the big thing that worries me is that while I like the Ayodele and Carpenter pickups, they still have a learning curve to the 3-4 and in Carpenter's case, the NFL.

While I don't think Ferguson was bad last year, he needs to step up in my mind and if he goes down, I'm not too confident that they can just plug in Johnson and Stanley and not miss a good beat.

Then there's FS. My guess is Watkins will play sparingly. Last year as the season progressed the coaching staff started to play Roy more and more in the FS role or just kept him away from the LOS because Davis couldn't be trusted.

Although if these areas work themselves out pretty well, this could be a scary defense with the CB play, Roy, the D-Linemen, along with Ware and Carpenter. Not to mention Ellis in the nickel, which he exceled at playing last year.

Maybe you missed it, but we signed Marcus Coleman, a starting caliber FS with a lot of experience.

We also have the guy who started at FS for most of the season last year.

And we have this guy we drafted that is supposed to be a stud.

I'm pretty sure we will be able to field and acceptable FS.

Coleman isn't a lock to start.

Davis at FS again would be :bang2: :bang2:

FS this, FS that.

The fact is that if we can pressure the QB better than last year our FS is going to look a whole lot better.

didn't he get 10 INTs his first season with the Browns, playing the FS position? he was probably our MVP on defense until he went down around Game 5 last year - as a CB. if our secondary upgrades the FS spot, and our defense overall is more active with blitzing, mobile LBs, etc, we have an excellent chance of being dominant. i have to add that a better offense scoring more points allows you to do more blitzing and gambling, which is what creates turnovers. both sides of the ball should be improved, but you're right - this defense has the chance to be scary good. Top 5...

Agree both Ayodele & Carpenter along with backup Boiman & back from IR Kalen Thornton will have a learning curve--but all other LBs had same curve last year and played pretty good. These new guys will get help from other players who now will be in their second year.

We were a top 5 defense last year for the first half of the year; it was the combined loss of Dat & Singleton, Henry's groin injury & rookies just waring down a bit which dropped us down to 10th--still not bad for a new defensive scheme. Don't know if we will have a SB caliber winning defense this year, but if our offense get the job done, we sure could make a serious run. I'm more concerned about our OL protecting Bledsoe & opening up running lanes along with TO getting familiar with our offense.

We have a tough bunch of early games, most on the road, so we'll know early on just how far we can go--bearing too many major injuries.

Davis sucked, otherwise this still wouldnt be an issue.

Coleman was a liability in coverage in Houston and is coming off an injury, at his age starting caliber is an exaggeration.

we draft a FS who fell to the 5th round, a stud? doubt it, we have no idea, he could Leaf out on us.

Im pretty sure we thought we were gonna field an acceptable FS last season...... pffff

I completely agree..

At the end of the year I thought that our linebackers would be our weakness going into this year if we stayed with Fujita, Shanle or Fowler as regular starters. Ayodele and Carpenter address that concern.. even if it takes them a few games to get acclimated, especially with Carpenter being able to apply some pressure from the strong side. Singleton was at least solid if they need him to ease the transition.

With a full off-season for the rookies from last year.. who I think all played pretty well.. things should improve even more along the line. Fergy and Spears both got banged up and Canty was less than a year removed from his surgery, which is always a two year thing before regaining full strength and mobility.

Needless to say, I'm defnitely looking forward to seeing how this all comes together

if our FS spot is filled with solid play by either Coleman or the rookie then we should be a Top 5 D and in a year or 2 i think we will be the top D or at least top 3 with a team that creates a lot of TO's

I don't think that will be much of a problem for Akin, Bradie James had to deal with the same thing, and that was being an inexperienced player going into his 3rd year, and he did alright

having a Dline rotation like we do, and Carp, very real possibility

There's a big issue with chemistry on our defense. The old guard-- Glover, Dat, Dex, Singleton, Ellis-- is still being phased out and no one has yet demonstrated that they can take over their positions. Sure we have promising draft picks, but outside of DeMarcus Ware they haven't actually done anything yet.

We NEED good coaching on defense-- desperately-- and I'm praying our new LB coach can elevate our players better than Zimmer did last year.

I can't see a position on the defense that's not improved.

This defense finished 10th in the league despite:

1) Playing their first season in the 3-4
2) Sustaining injuries to several veteran players
3) Playing a bunch of rookies throughout the season
4) Playing a "vanilla" version of the 3-4

I see no reason to think that this year's version won't be markedly better!
