Our lower rounded drafts and UDFAs

A question here. I got to noticing in yesterday's game that we've got, what seems like to me, a lot of lower drafted and un-drafted players doing well for us. Is this just my homerism or do the rest of the teams get as much out of their guys like this? Below is the list and I'm sure I missed some.

Romo (big time so far)
Crayton
Barber (He's a Hoss)
Hurd (just yesterday I know, but he looked great)
Ratliff
Watkins ( I know, early, but I think he's going to be good if he get his conf.)
Canty
Hoyte

-Some you may could put in this category based on not being "blue chippers"
Witten 3rd round
Hatcher-may be a little early on him also, seems like he may be a beast

3rd, 4th and 5th rounders don't really apply to this discussion. Those guys are really mid-rounders, and it's not as if those guys are long shots and the only players that are supposed to work out are the 1st and 2nd rounders - there wouldn't be enough players to fill out rosters if that were the case.

But your point about low rounders and UDFA's is valid - we do seem to be successful in getting something from a fair amount of those guys.

Don't forget Tyson Thompson, Miles Austin, Keith Davis and Ryan Fowler. For some of those guys Special Teams has been the only significant impact area, but they are all young and who knows - we are getting value out of them now and they may grow into expanded roles.

Jaques Reeves also contributes some, and I personally believe McQuistan has some potential.

Nice post. Some times really miss bad in the middle rounds. But these players have looked good for us no doubt.

Witten was a 3rd rd pick- but getting a pro bowl player there is certainly an over acheiver. Any time you get a starter in the second day you have beaten the game. Watkins if he improves could be as big a steal as James.
Canty LOOKED to be a steal but if he does not improve...

You make an interesting point, and it's probably one reason why the cowboys have been an average football team over the years. If your 1st and 2nd rounders are producing for you, then your team will be very good, but if the middle to low rounders are the heart of your team, then obviously your team is going to be average.

Time will tell, and you really can't judge a draft until at least three years later. You just can't keep consistently missing in the early rounds like we have been, and expect to be one of the top teams in the league. Fortunately for us, and the entire league, free agents are keeping our head above water-probably why there is so much parity in the league also.

Does anyone know what round Flo, Kozier, Gurode, Rivera, and Colombo were drafted in?

Flozel was a Cowboys 2nd rounder back in 98 or 99.
Kozier was a 49er pick on the 2nd day (I think).
Gurode was a 2nd rounder for the Cowboys in 2002.
I think Riveria was a 2nd day pick for the Packers.
Colombo was a first round pick in 2002 for the Bears and started for them as a rookie until he seriously injuried his knee/nerve damage (on IR rest of 02, all of 03 & on pup in 04); cut by them late in 2005 preseason.

I think what's important/interesting to note is that our late picks and UDFAs are rarely (if ever) of the "big-name" variety. Every year, we see those big name, thought-to-be third-round picks, slip. And nearly each time, we pass. It's impossible to hit on all those picks, but I do think we've done a fairly solid job of making the most of them.

yeah, we don't get the big names, but more often times than not, we get the solid producers from top-notch college programs

obviously Crayton and Romo being the exception
