I think in this draft he would have been the same type of prospect as Xavier Cooper, Grady Jarrett or Michael Bennett. Probably would have had a 2nd or 3rd Rd projection in this class if healthy. I'm expecting him to make the roster as the backup 3T and rotate with Crawford and Mcclain on passing downs with Mincey and Hardy seeing some snaps at the 3T occasionally.

In the perfect world Whaley shows some real upside and makes Crawford expendable at the end of the season. Right now Crawford is going to be a high priority in the offseason because he is the only real 3T and while I would like to keep him, it would be nice to have some leverage and a heir apparent if he leaves.

I'm not sure if that video was supposed to be evidence for Whaley or against him. The portion I looked at showed a player who was getting washed out by the line.
I agree. I do not understand why he is getting more benefit of the doubt than the rest of the tail end of the DT depth chart. Wishful thinking, perhaps.

The tapes here don't reveal anything special coming from Whaley that I could see. He appears to be more of a 1-tech here than a 3-tech by any measure. Then again, we'll see what Marinelli can make of him. Good luck.

He's a 3T currently that might play 1T also if he get's his weight up.

I do not recall him holding anything close to that kind of grade when healthy prior to the start of 2013. Where are you getting this from?

Whaley was a RB at one time....then went on D...

Right. Just like Melton, Whaley was a RB, then FB, then DL; dudes just kept growing.

3T would be his ideal spot, and he still has great upside since he hasn't played that spot for very long.

The other Malcolm Brown from UT is a RB who went undrafted, and was signed by the Rams yesterday. He was a high school all-american at Cibolo Steele, and he lead them to the state championship over Denton Guyer in 2010 (was at that game).

For those of you who advocated Malcolm Brown in Round 1, I think our redshirt DT, Chris Whaley (#96), looks just as much the prospect. He looks just as disruptive here and had 2nd-3rd round grade before the knee injury. While Brown (#90) certainly has more size and is a natural 1-tech, I think Whaley can take some snaps there.

I don't know that he would be rated as high as Brown, but he definitely compares well with a guy like Xavier Cooper who was a 3rd round pick.

Notice that there are many snaps where he is double-teamed and Brown is not.

Definitely a coup if we end up getting something out of Whaley.

On draft day, I would've taken Brown at 27. But it probably worked out better overall that we didn't.
With Gregory falling to 60, we wouldn't have gotten a CB until the 3rd or later.
Jones could eventually (1-2 years) end up being special. We needed high end CB help.

how long has it been since he played football? its a long shot for him to even make the PS.I am more interested in guys like Bishop ,Coleman and Jack crawford who showed something but they need to take the next step because the Dline is getting crowded.

Universe of Texas players are soft, everbody know that. If they are not soft they are head cases. If they is not head cases then they are in jail.

Brent is our 1T with Bishop and Hayden

Whaley may fight to get into the 3T rotation after TCrawford

I always get confused on what size makes a good 1T or 3T or 5T. I use this cheat sheet to help bring facts to the conversation.

I just always get confused on the height weight numbers. :hammer::lmao:
