One problem: We need PR's and KR's, and this guy isn't it.

We didn't used to make a big deal about returns, and that was before they were rendered less useful by rule changes.

Pollard took 14 kick returns of 20.
Tavon got most of the punt returns, but both Cobb and Wilson had better averages than he did.

Used to be the fast non-starters would be given a chance, and we'd take the best WR or DB. And it seems like most times we specifically attempted to get a returner we flopped, while the low budget guys we threw back there did fine.

Just talking about the attempt to dump Crayton for some veteran PR specialist fancy pants, only to cut the specialist and have Crayton return two to the house that year.

Late round winners Harris, Crayton, MIles, Beasley, Whitehead
Mid round Flubs - Switzer, Stanback, Skyler Green
Free agent specialists - Tavon, unnamed guy Crayton dunked on
First round Stars - Felix, Dez

The data is in. Don't waste a mid round pick targeting a returner. Whatever the wisdom of it, we suck at it. Meanwhile, we got our bread and butter returners over years from the late rounds and UDFAs.

Don't sleep on D. Smith

He might catch a pass this season

Smith caught on last year. The team didn't catch on to him.

Devin Smith 2019
5-9 113yds 4 first downs, 1 TD, 0 drops, 12.6 ypt 137.5 QB rating when targeted

On the targets we gave him, he was *fantastic*. If a rookie first rounder did that for us on the first 9 targets we gave him, we'd be thrilled.

I wonder if all these fans who suggest letting Michael Gallup go realize how much he has developed and will be entering his 3rd season this upcoming season.

Michael Gallup is 2 years younger than Amari Cooper, started 4 less games last season than Cooper and had only 2 TD catches and 82 reception yards less than Cooper, who had a Pro bowl season.

This is a very good young duo of WR's. Whoever the coaching staff wants to send over the middle for those dirty yards and catches, whether it be Dez, another vet signing, someone on our roster or a draft pick will conclude if it is a triple threat at WR.

But Cooper and Gallup can both score in the red zone and we all know Dez was one of the best there was in the red zone. If he's still half that guy and the team is going to add him would mean they feel he can also score down there and make some tough catches needed by our 3rd WR.

I wonder if all these fans suggesting we must keep Gallup plan on paying free agent money to every position on offense, and never letting anyone go.

Yeah, Gallup is good. Think that will make him cheap in 2 years? Geezer Cobb just went for 9. Gallup is young and was 20th in yards this year. Do the math. You plan on paying 20 for Cooper *and* 15 for Gallup?

Hedge your bets on that with a WR in the top 3 rounds. Especially since, as much as I like Gallup and Coop, they have an alarming tendency to vanish when it counts.

No one is clamoring for Gallup's departure. We need him.

I didn't know we were interested in him. Could be there in the fifth.

Overview
Contested-catch warrior who plays the game like a big brother imposing his will on his younger brothers on the playground. Johnson's lack of speed and explosiveness make it hard to create clean catch windows unless he's working against zone. However, he's an absolute rebound champ, using instincts, timing and an impressive knowledge of body control to keep defenders away from the football and make it his own. His production speaks directly to his ball skills and competitiveness, but physical limitations might pigeon-hole him into a role as a zone-beating possession slot with red-zone talent.
Strengths
  • Tremendously productive over last three seasons
  • Put his name on a long list of school records
  • Play strength reminiscent of AJ Brown
  • Recognizes acceleration opportunities to play past coverage
  • Rare ball skills and instincts as ball-winner
  • Basketball background shows when bodying defenders at catch-point
  • Defenders catch shoulders, back and hips anywhere on the field
  • Diligent in working back to his quarterback
  • Uses tracking and stacking to handle deep catches
  • Excellent high-point timing and mid-air adjustments

I don't think we draft for slot. We draft a guy who can become a legit #2, as I don't expect us to pay Gallup. Can't pay everyone, and we almost have already. 2 years lets him grow into a starter. Also, Cooper has a weird contract, where we can legitimately let him go after 2, so maybe we keep Gallup and dump Cooper.

With a deep WR draft, a thin bench, and big decisions to be made in 2 years, now is the perfect time to pick up a quality WR.

Gallup has 2 years to proved he can be a #1 guy for US. It's possible, very possible he could play himself into a huge payday too rich for our taste. In other words, we could potentially lose Coop and Gallup in 2 years. It's a bit early to worry about their replacements but I'd certainly consider one 3rd or 4th round. Also, not sure how many here heard/know but word is, next year's crop of WRs is projected just as strong as 2020.

I saw this over on Dallas Cowboys.com that we are interested in this guy.

As our new slot receiver and Redzone guy..

Looks good.

I hate to beat a dead horse but Dak doesnt throw the ball into the middle of the endzone where there is traffic. He doesnt trust his arm accuracy.

We can agree more or less.

Why are people minimizing Gallup so much?

I think some believe #2 WR is just easy to replace.

It ain't.

Keeping guys together only improves chemistry and timing.

Dak does not impress me as a QB who will easily transfer to new receivers.

Cooper was the exception.

Explain.?

Did you not like Tyler Johnson, the point of the thread.

Tsk tsk..promoting your own agendas. Naughty.
I'm not sure if it's people minimizing Gallup. I think most are saying Gallup will be too good to get low money and Dallas can't afford him plus having Cooper contract. With a young receiver this year, especially Lamb or Juedy, that would allow Dallas to keep Cooper and let Gallup go......or pay the top salary to Gallup and let Cooper go.

The two best WRs in the NFL ran a 4.57 40.
Right?

No doubt Amari is fast but not the fastest.

Whatever happens at WR..I really really want for once to have a threat at kick return this year.

Shorter drives has a huge impact on scoring.

We have had nothing since Hsrris left.

Now?

Beasley and his fair catches used to just floor me. No return and no pressure from that neutral response to change of possession.

If we changed JUST THAT it would be a different team.

Another punter needs to be signed.

Off the soapbox.

Meh. Supposedly Tyler Johnson has average speed (4.5+ 40 time). Probably why he refused to run the 40 at the combine.

I would rather have Dez for dirt cheap while drafting big and fast beast WR Denzel Mims.

and have Dez taking up possible reps and time away from Mims... wow, does that make any sense ?

if you really believe Mims (or anyone else) is a " beast " then you commit to him, and give him every amount of chances
and touches to develop, you let him be the 3rd platoon, rather than reminiscence towards a social media locker room,
and in QB's ear detraction has-been that was already criticized for a lack of separation, burst and suspect route runner who didn't believe in mastering
footwork routes, and that was just before he was cut, and add that hes has been out of football for almost 2 years, while coming off an serious achilles injury (which very rare if any players return to previous form) ...and now some fans still want him back ? but yet fans still want a " beast" like Mims on the side as well? .. LOL

LOL ... Noah's Ark cannot even break out of OTAs or minicamps... hurt and out of both camp and regular season football for the last 2 years...!!

Hamstring this year ...knee inury that year ... (sigh) lets just move to fresher, healthier green passages and investments.

" Bye Felicia !!" ....

Fun guy to watch in College, but he might have a hard time getting on the field as a pro. He isnt a very good route runner and his athleticism is really going to hold him back.

Cooper is under contract, so we don't have to *lose* him in two years.

If he doesn't live up to his contract, we can look into Gallup as his *replacement*. Through franchise tags, we will have the inside track on Gallup for that.

Too expensive to keep *both*, IMO. With Cooper under contract, we could see about *trading* him.

Interesting about another bumper crop of WRs next year.

3rd or 4th round to groom a potential WR#2 to go with Cooper *or* Gallup is where I am too. If we could move on from both, great. WR is not a position I want to spend tons on. Not the Patriot way. The leagues most elite WRs just having been on championship teams. Poor allocation of resources.
