I like the guys playmaking ability and he has made some excellent catches, BUT
I think he now has 8 drops a few of which can be attributed to hearing footsteps and a couple of which maybe can be attributed to running upfield before the catch. He has dropped 2 touchdowns. He dropped the 4th down play that was even more important and could also have been a touchdown.
That is too many drops. And don't forget the two major "slips" he has had when the ball was there and he slipped on wet field, both feet going right out from under him both times. That is two more I could add to the "drops" category where he had the chance to make the play and it wasn't QB's fault. Add 2 TD's as part of maybe 5 of those 10 drops/slips and his stats start to look a whole lot better and this team is maybe 1 game better in win column.
I give him benefit of doubt due to rust and slow chemistry with Bledsoe as well as the broken hand didn't help for that game and maybe the next.
But all in all he can do better.
To be fair he has been open for a few more TD passes that Dallas missed him on or didn't have time to get the ball out to him. Bledsoe's arm got hit on 3 or 4 occassions when TO was open.
So the key is, if Romo can find him visually quicker and get the ball out, that will help. Romo has a faster release and seems to checkdown his receivers very quickly and make those decisions better than Bledsoe, and obviously much faster and better than Henson did. Also, I think Romo will look to TO first a bit more than Bledsoe did who used Glenn as his security blanket.
If Romo can buy a bit more time by moving either inside the pocket stepping up or dodging arms, OR by rolling out or escaping the pocket, there will be a huge benefit to TO, Glenn, and Witten in terms of having that extra second to get open and make the move/plant to get seperation. Going back to watch film and our offense was a 1/2 second behind making some potentially big plays because we just couldn't buy enough time.
But Owens needs to cut his drops in half and he has to make those big plays when the game is on the line, not just in vanilla games and catch up period. We do need to get him involved earlier in game.
New season starts Sunday. Exciting, but a bit scary. But hopefully the oline and TO and everyone uses the game as a fresh slate and we can start building for a playoff run. This team needs to come together a bit more.
