Even in a season in which the Cowboys are 5-1 and likely the best team in the NFC, wide out Terrell Owens is finding much to complain about. Owens played off some comments Wednesday as “frustration” and not “complaints” when it came to his role in the teams passing game. This season he has 16 catches for 329 yards and three scores, but just like always - wants more. And with that, let the “frustration” begin.
The start of the complaining came after the Cowboys were picked apart by the Patriots at home last Sunday. He did pull in six passes for 66 yards, but said he would have liked to have seen the team open up the passing game more to try and match the high powered offense of the Pats. “I was frustrated we didn’t go down the field as much,” he said before Wednesday’s practice. “With the way they played, we could have taken some shots. Even despite that, there were opportunities for us to win the game.”
Unlike former coach Bill Parcells, who would have likely declined comment on Owens’ talk, current coach Wade Phillips has told the coaches to make sure #81 sees the ball thrown to him as much as possible. “It’s easy to say that there’s enough routes that he’s a primary guy, but the quarterback still has to make those decisions,” Phillips said. “They double your primary guy [so] you can’t throw it to him every down, that kind of thing.”
Ownes was also not shy to take a bit of a shot at QB Tony Romo. When asked about the lack of chances he’s had in the 4th quarter of games this season, T.O. said it’s on Romo’s shoulders to find him and get him the ball. “That’s all on the quarterback,” Owens said. “Other than that, all I can do is run my routes. Look at the film and there’s some situations and opportunities for me to get the ball.”
Likely this week the tensions of a loss will fade quickly, as Owens and fellow pass catcher Patrick Crayton should get plenty of chances against the Minnesota Vikings pass defense, one of the worst in the NFL. Leave it to T.O. though to turn what has been a good season so far in Dallas into one where his mouth is starting to get in the way again, as it usually does.
