Packers Sign Free Agent Quarterback Bart Faver
With the Brett Favre situation finally resolved on Tuesday with the Packers and its legendary quarterback agreeing to part ways, the team moved today to add depth to the quarterback position by signing little-known, free agent quarterback Bart Faver.
“Trust me, this Bart Faver fellow can really help this team,” said head coach Mike McCarthy. “I have a strong feeling that he is the kind of quarterback our fans will be happy to have on the team.”
While McCarthy stressed that Aaron Rodgers remains the team’s starting quarterback, he stressed that no player’s job is ever guaranteed indefinitely.
“Aaron remains our guy. I have been consistent with that,” said McCarthy. “But it is always about performance. If someone in camp is outplaying him in practices and in games – say Brian Brohm or ... I don’t know ... this newcomer Brett Fav-, I mean this Bart Faver fellow, well – then that guy will be our starting quarterback in Week 1.”
Little is known about Faver’s past, he reportedly played college football years ago at a school in Mississippi, but that didn’t stop general manager Ted Thompson from signing him to a one-year, $12.2 million contract – the exact salary number former quarterback Brett Favre was set to receive this season.
“I don’t know what to say – we have a good feeling about Faver,” said Thompson. “He said that if he was going to agree to this, he wouldn’t accept any less than what Brett Favre was going to be paid. He drove a hard bargain. You know, he reminded me a lot of Brett Favre in that way.”
Faver says that he feels no pressure following in the footsteps of a legend in Green Bay.
“I know all about Brett Favre. I know how he thinks. I know what makes him tick,” said Faver. "I even know what his wife looks like naked. Don’t ask me how, as I am obligated by my new contract not to give details about such things, but I know. And I think I can do a pretty good Brett Favre impersonation here in Green Bay. I just hope to throw a lot fewer interceptions than he did.”
