Packers | Vinatieri leaves town without an offer
Fri, 17 Mar 2006 22:34:42 -0800

Michael Felger, of the Boston Herald, reports free agent PK Adam Vinatieri (Patriots) left Green Bay Friday night, March 17, without a contract offer from the Green Bay Packers following a two-day visit. The prevailing wisdom was that the Packers were serious about offering Vinatieri a mega-deal; otherwise the visit would not have taken place. Vinatieri is likely looking for the largest deal ever given to a kicker, which would mean an annual salary well over $2 million per season and a signing bonus north of $3 million.

He's still out there I guess but I don't want to give him near that kind of money.

I don't like the idea of spending that much on a kicker, but realities have changed:

(1) With the cap, you have to be creative on improvement since the league wants parity. One way to do that is to have better facilities, coaches (look at the Skins), private jets, etc.

(2) I think with parity, games get tighter so special teams become more important. Therefore it may make sense to pay for him. We did it with Robinson, and I don't think that was a bad call at all.

We have a lot of money, and I think we should try to nail it this year and spend it. Last year we still had cap room. This would also take a big load off of BP's mind and our minds.

Do it.

It's inevitable that a few games a year will come down to the kicking game. And when someone is out there like Vinatieri who is pretty much as clutch as it gets, he's worth every penny.

I'd guess off the top of my head that there are two games a year per team that'd come down to a kicker making a game winning kick. That could be the difference between 8-8 and 10-6. 10-6 most likely will get you to the playoffs. That alone, is worth his paycheck.

I wish my Skins would get their kicking game straightened out. Hall isn't what he used to be, thats for sure.

Sign Vinatieri and with TO you'll have made an awesome upgrade on your offense this offseason.

a 4 year 10 million deal with a 3 mil SB really wouldn't have that much of a dent at all

He's not going to get that kind of money...this is good news. Eventually he will realize he's going to have to settle for less and we'll be able to grab him at a reasonable cost.

Give it to him. $3 mill bonus, sign him up for 5 years. Even with an annual salary of $2 million, his hit is negligable.

I still can't believe a kicker making that kind of money...a KICKER! I suppose with parity and the type of game Parcells likes to play, we'd be crazy not to pay for one.

Still, if Vina-what's-his-name doesn't come down on his price, Josh Brown would be a good alternative and better value.

Well, when you kick two game winners in Super Bowls, your price skyrockets upward. :)

I think the longer he's on the market, the more likely we suddenly emerge as potential players in this thing. That's the good news.

Clearly, if we threw price out the window, he's the best option out there. Even considering his demands, he's still probably the best thing in terms of value given how battle-tested and proven he is.

The market for him is dwindling heavily, almost to the point of New England being his only option unless we throw our hat in the ring. I'm curious, what is New England's current offer to him?

Dale, I agree. I think we may still have a chance to nab him considering the market is drying up fairly quickly.

Overall, I really like the front office's approach to the free agency. And not pulling the trigger on a kicker early may land us Vinatieri at a good price.

The interesting thing is, for all the Bryant and Longwell love early, the two best kickers are still on the market. And Josh Brown isn't a bad consolation prize if everything else falls through.

I wonder if this is partially why we haven't offered anything to Brown yet? Could our eye be on a guy like Vinatieri, just checking out his situation? Or, are we waiting for the timing to be right with Brown, so we can try to offer a contract when Seattle may be unprepared to match?

I would love to see us grab Vinatieri as much as anyone else. However, from a practical standpoint I just don't see it happening.

While this may be a questionable year in free agency, there's little doubt that it's a good one when it comes to kickers. There are several options out there, including the very best in the league. However, while I see JJ ready to take a leap and spend some money on this position for the first time, well... ever, I only see him willing to compromise to a point. Do we really expect him to pay $3M for the best clutch kicker in the league when he can get a very good alternative (Brown/Vanderjagt/Mare) for less than half that? If offered any less than $3M, Vinatieri will simply choose to go back to the Pats and sign for ~$2.5M plus whatever other local commercial tie-ins he has/will have in place considering his history with that market.

Given JJ's history when it comes to kickers, I would be shocked to see him pay out the nose for the top kicker when there are very good alternatives available for significantly less.

Good first post, and :welcome:

Either way, given our past struggles with our recent kickers who've cost us some games, I'm willing to bet JJ and Parcells may re-evaluate their thinking on this position.

If we don't come out of this with either Adam Vinatieri or Josh Brown, this would be a huge disappointment.

Oh, I agree. Frankly, I think JJ considering Brown or Vanderjagt at the cost of perhaps a $1.2-1.5M signing bonus would be a fairly significant re-evaluation, considering our prior bargain-basement kickers.

Bum rep aside, I think Mike Vanderjagt would be a nice alternative as well, and Olindo Mare isn't a bad alternative either. Outside of that, yeah, I wouldn't be too happy either.

Look at the bright side, he could sign a long term deal, and go in the HOF a Cowboy.

Sign him now! Alot of cap room left for one of the most important positions to fill. People underestimate the importance of a kicker. Its usually the highest scoring position.
