Henning, two other coaches fired by Panthers
Associated Press

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Carolina Panthers fired offensive coordinator Dan Henning and two other assistants Monday, two weeks after finishing a disappointing 8-8 season.

Offensive line coach Mike Maser and secondary coach Rod Perry were also let go.

"This is a very difficult decision because these coaches have played an integral role in the success we have experienced since coming to the Panthers," coach John Fox said. "They were part of a Super Bowl and two NFC championship games and those accomplishments would not have been possible without their contributions."

The Panthers struggled on offense and failed to make the playoffs, hurt in part by numerous injuries on the offensive line. But Henning's playcalling also came under question as Carolina struggled to run and get the ball to receiver Steve Smith.

Can't believe they fired him. I guess the players aren't held accountable for anything in Carolina because that guy is a heck of a coach.

Didn't he mention wanting to get this guy at one time but he could not since he was with the panthers?

Would that be by signing him.. or passing on him even though they're friends? ;)

We were 5th in over all O and one of 4 teams to score 425 points. Carolina on the other hand were ranked 24th and scored 155 less points than we did. Ya, Dan's the man:rolleyes:

I could care less what any number say hes a good coach regardless of how his players executed his offense this year.

Hes a 100% upgrade to any of the offensive coaches we have on this staff.

I love the style of football the Panthers play too. I hope like heck we bring this guy in.

He'd have to fire or demote Sparano. Doubt this will happen.

By all accounts, Sparano did a great job this year. Why would we demote him just to bring in Bill's old pal?

Exactly, but then some don't think before they type.

So you don't think Parcells is going to give this guy serious consideration?

I think you need to think before you type.

So he is good coach even when the players dont execute but BP and company have been destroyed on this site as of late because the players arent executing his offense.

True true :hammer:

Under contract

Mr. Wilson and Mr. Zimmer received raises and two-year extensions that run through 2004. Mr. Avezzano, who has survived every coaching change under Mr. Jones, is signed through 2006.

University of Alabama coach Mike Price has talked to Mr. Zimmer about the possibility of becoming the defensive coordinator at Alabama, two sources said.

Mr. Parcells would like to hire Dan Henning to be offensive coordinator, two sources said. Mr. Henning is Carolina's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, but there has been speculation that the Panthers would release him from his contract so that they could hire New York Giants offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Sean Payton.

Mr. Payton worked with Carolina coach John Fox when Mr. Fox was the Giants defensive coordinator

I guess Henning would have to come in as an offensive consultant.

Yes.

And the players have executed this offense. Numbers will show you that.

BP spends a lot of time on our offense as well.

I think he would trust Henning enough to give im the reigns and not have to spend nearly as much time worrying about the offensive game plan.

Bill would be able to be more involved with the defensive gameplanning too.

Its a win win for us to bring this guy in.

We need an real OC. The OC by committee doesn't work. I'm all for hiring Henning. I don't think the Panthers offensive owes were his fault. I can name several problems with their offense last year. How about the drop passes in big situations. Reminds me a TO...

Hell, get Dom Capers as DC too! Draft Joe Thomas and sign Adeluis Thomas! Fix those owes damnit! We'd be Super Bowl Bound! :laugh2:
