So what have we had? Two 5-0 teams face each other? A 7-0 face an 8-0? And now two 10-1 teams squaring off...

Many have talked about all the parity in the league over the last decade.

Not this year.

You truly have some dominant teams and at least one that is absolutely dreadful (Miami).

So for at least the rest of this season let's drop the "p" word. :)

Totally agree.

Part of it is they keep raising the cap. A few years back many were saying the Colts could "no way" afford Harrison, Wayne, Freeney AND Manning, but not only have they done so, they have shored up their defense somewhat while they were at it.

When you talk of the Giants, Seahawks, Buccaneers, Cards as good teams and potential playoff teams, then you look at the likes of the Pats, Cowboys and Green Bay, you can see there isn't much parity. Not this yr anyways.

Happy holidays Winkster.

It must be Christmas season, the Heat Meister av is back. I wondered when it would show up.

I gotta agree, there not much in the way of parity at all this year. You can say the middle of the pack guys all have some level of parity, but you could have said that 40 years ago when the word hadn't even entered the discussion.

This year is about haves and have nots. It sure feels good to be a have.

Last decade? Ive heard people talking about parity for almost 30 years now, since 78 when they extended the schedule to 16 games, instituted a balanced schedule formula and added two more playoff teams per conference. The talk began then and hasnt stopped since.

I disagree (partly) and think that this season is a perfect example that parity is alive and active in the NFL.

Parity isn't about a single season but about dynasties. The goal of parity in the NFL is to eliminate dynasties, teams that win year after year, like what we saw in the 60s & 70s. The hope by the league is that teams will cycle through winning and losing seasons as they build and re-build.

The other goal, and why I said I disagreed (partly), is that they want teams to hover around 8-8, some teams at 10-6 and some at 6-10, but not many outside that range.

This year there are 17 teams within 6-4 - 4-6, which is just where the NFL would like them to be. There are 9 teams who are outside the lines with more than 7 wins or losses. That leaves another 6 teams with 7 wins or losses who are on the bubble.

Last year there were 20 teams within the range, and only 5 significantly outside it (13 wins or losses).

I would agree that this year there is a higher percentage outside the preferred range but that this is a little bit of an aberration and not indicative of parity being a thing of the past.

The increase in salary cap the last two years has allowed teams to retain talent more than any other time in the past 13 years.

We are still seeing teams that did poorly last year doing well this year and vice-vera. In fact half of last year's playoff teams are likely to not make it this year.

Just my take on it.

One of the complaints I have always had about this so called parity BS is that the league works so hard to bring down teams that were built carefully and with great skill just so that they do not embarrass the teams that stink it up because of greed and stupidity (Bungles, Cards). If they wanted real parity they would get rid of the Bidwells, Bensons and SNYDERS.
A whole bunch of teams all 7-9, 8-8, 9-7 is not a very exciting prospect. We need 3-4 teams in each conference to be 11-5 or better. The worst thing to me would be some 8-8 team getting all the way to the SB. It lowers the bar way too much.

Green Bay lost to a sub .500 team and nearly lost a number of other games including the Commanders. Dallas has nearly lost to the Commanders and Bills.

The only team that's shown clear superiority IMO is New England. With the exception of the Colts game, they haven't been in jeopardy in the 4th quarter in any game this year.

They started the 4th quarter 31-24 against the Cowboys, with the Cowboys converting a huge 4th and 1 that was brought back due to a hold. Definite jeopardy there.

And Dallas was never in any danger of losing to the Commanders. The Commanders would have had to get the lead that to be the case. Jason "Poise" Campbell threw his poise right into Terrence Newman's bread-basket.

Well...you would be the expert on close games.

Miami 13 - Commanders 16
Arizona 19 - Commanders 21
Jets 20 - Commanders 23

Some real powerhouse teams there and but for one play here or there you'd be staring at a 2-8 record as opposed to 5-5.

...but thanks for bringing it up.

Mmkay........carry on.

I have said the same for years. Teams like the Cardinals, Bengals, Lions, etc. who never win anything should be sold off and their players put into a draft/lottery for the other teams. I wish the league would get rid of 8 teams and keep the number at 24 teams forever. If they want a team in a new market then that means someone has to go or move there, no new franchises as it has watered down the talent level throughout the league.

Of course, this will NEVER happen because the prime directive is about dollars not the quality of the games. More teams = more dollars for the league and owners.

To me, the heyday of the NFL was from the late 60s - mid 80s when there were a handful of teams who dominated the league and were in the playoffs nearly every year. They changed over time but usually didn't fall too far.

From the mid 80s on we have had a couple of dynasties but for the most part it has been the flavor-of-the-month, whatever team was hot that year.

Look at the 70s in particular: In the NFC you had the Cowboys, Vikings, Rams, & Commanders as the dominant teams (with the 49ERs & Cards thrown in for a couple of playoff years). Those 4 teams represented the NFC in ever SB and were in the playoffs almost every season of the decade.

In the AFC you had the Steelers, Dolphins, & Raiders (with the Colts & Broncos representing once each). There were a couple of other teams who made things interesting at times (Oilers, Patriots, Browns, & Bengals) but for the most part, those 3 teams dominated the playoffs.

In this decade you have the Patriots, Colts, & Eagles and that is about it. The NFC in particular has been a mishmash of teams every year (Rams, Giants, Falcons, Bucs, Eagles, Panthers, Seahawks, Bears, etc.).

The NFL is too watered down now and the inability of teams to retain quality players or to develop project players is killing the quality of the play on the field.

Teams accross the league were well under cap and can and have locked up players with future Cap years rising as well.

It's Dallas and Pats. We are going to exposure Packers as pretenders!

If you look at it the other way we could also be 9-1 had we won 4 other close games that we lost against you guys, the Pack, Giants, and Eagles. Your point?

I do give Dallas and GB credit for finishing their close games. That is why you are leading the NFC. But you don't have that invincible aura that the Patriots do, that is all I'm saying.

We were winning the majority of the game.
