Parker: There's a premium on instincts

I am not a psychologist or any other type of certified brain doctor. But i just think linebacker instincts seem like a trait that would be a natural part of a player's makeup after having played the position in many cases from Pop Warner thru middle and high school and on through college.

This type of experience in playing that position should have brought about an almost natural quality of instincts for playing the linebacker position.

BUT last year's Murray, Luafau and James ALL showed NO instinctual ability to play the linebacker position whatsoever.

This display of lack of instincts had absolutely nothing to do with Eberflus's scheme or coaching.
Some players can get by on athleticism, so they don't have to trust their instincts. In high school and college, if they don't see the play developing before it develops, they still have the speed to beat blockers. So a player like Murray gets overdrafted based on the fact that he was able to outrace linemen not good enough to play in the NFL to the spot and make a play. Then, when they get into the NFL, even the worst NFL starting offensive linemen will make you pay for hesitation or being out of position.

New Cowboys DC Christian Parker on @1053thefan on how Dallas’ current defensive tackles fit his system: “When I was in Green Bay with (Kenny Clark), he was the best nose (tackle) in football, in my opinion, at doing this style because he plays with good length and he has a good anchor. Quinnen Williams, this is how he played at Alabama.”

Parker on if executing the mental side of his scheme is more important than raw athleticism: “Yes and no. I still think that you want a lot of athletic, fast guys because there are gonna be times where there is space, and you have to eliminate it. We’re not trotting out a YMCA basketball team. We still want to be fast and aggressive, but I will say, there’s a premium on instincts, there’s a premium on the brain."

"At different spots, they have to handle a different mental workload in terms of where their eyes have to be. … You want guys to be able to process those things quickly. But you can’t go out there with just a bunch of height, weight, speed guys, either. This is not an operation where we’re gonna roll the ball out in the Whataburger parking lot and just play 7-on-7. We got to be able to process and do those things the right way.”

When asked about getting a head coaching job in the near future and if the next Cowboys DC is on his current staff: “Yes. I think we have a couple of them. … We definitely have that on the staff.”

Yeah, buddy. I feel some Kyle Louis coming to D-town baby!

Schotty also said he doesn't want any redshirt players this year.

So I'm not sure on McCoy anymore. He should be good to go by now, but there will inevitably be a transition to return to speed after being off for so long.
yeah even jerry said everyone drafted has to play this season, so no injured players.

He took a psychological approach. Studied that at Arkansas.
And Jerrys major in Arkansas was Buisiness Administration.

That's why he wont let this GM crap go.....he's convinced that hes perfectly qualified to be doing it.

If he wants to use his abacus to balance the numbers its fine, but let others do player aquisition

Correct. And most of these guys bust in the NFL.

Good post.

McCoy might not be seen as a redshirt though. He should be a full go by his Pro Day. The one to watch was that he should have been a full go by the combine. So right now, Id say that bears watching. However given the timing of his injury, McCoy shouldn't be a red shirt situation
I think some Cowboys fans are understandably skittish about drafting a previously injured player.

The fact that he has opted out of the combine raises deep suspicions.

At the time Revel was drafted, wasn't he expected to play much sooner?

In any case, if the Cowboys spend the #12 overall pick, they have to get it right.

What do you mean? I don't get it.
It was a joke, our fan base is so erratic,
And not many have a sense of humor
I said Jimmy Johnson chose the mental side of football
And someone else said it was his psychological side
So I said you can’t use such language they won’t get it. Lol.

Ya I know. I guess my joke didn’t come across correctly.
